XFEL air scatter

It has long been thought that Air-scattering is not a big issue when dealing with Free Electron Laser (FEL) X-ray radiation. Now there is evidence that this may not be the case.

The picture shows a very early test shot from the newly inaugurated world's brightest FEL: The European XFEL in Hamburg (http://xfel.eu/).
There are many imperfections and sources of noise visible in the image. The first step towards solving the problems is to find out what their cause is. We will in this project focus on the innermost "blob" in the center, which is probably caused by Air-scattering.

Your tasks in this project is to use (and improve upon) a model of the FXE (Femtosecond EXperiments - https://www.xfel.eu/facility/instruments/fxe/index_eng.html) beamline at the E-XFEL, and confirm or reject the hypothesis that this is indeed scattering from air.

  • Statistical data-analysis
