Engineering Research Assistant position in the Advanced Computer Systems Group

The Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute, University of Southern Denmark, invites applications for an engineering research assistant position. The position is available from 1st February 2018 or as soon as possible hereafter, is based in Odense and runs for up to 2 years. Further extension may be possible, depending on resourcing and demand.

The Advanced Computer Systems Group is a group of teachers and researchers within hardware, operating systems and distributed systems. The group has three labs at its disposal: the Electronics lab, the Mechanics lab and the ACSG lab. The labs are staffed with a team of four skilled research assistants covering PCB design, Embedded systems, Mechanics, Software and IT Infrastructure. The advertised position is replacement for the one in embedded systems.

The group is further based in the Embodied Systems for Robotics and Learning (ESRL) unit and supports the unit's existing research and teaching activities in bio-inspired robotics, bio-robotics, medical robotics, educational robotics and embedded systems. The unit has a lively programme of research in bio-robotics, with lizards, frogs, dung beetles and bats as the key animal models; we also work on legged robots based on bio-inspired principles inspired by insects, construction of camera pill systems, interactive learning tools and other embedded electronic devices. The unit's participation in the robotics and UAS educations, as well as its Learning and Experience Technology programme, frequently result in the need for new technology for teaching and research. The unit has a strong collaboration with other SDU units such as Robotics, Electronics, Software and the UAS Centre and it has a history of building unusual and interesting experimental robots.

Responsibilities and tasks:

We seek a talented and enthusiastic engineer to assist us in the design, construction and programming of our novel robot systems. We envisage:

- an embedded electronics and software designer and builder, whose
work will centre on the specification of electronic systems,
assembly of electronic and mechatronic prototype subsystems and
robots, creating and installing firmware on new prototypes,
experimenting with new hardware prototypes, and some hardware
fabrication.

Applicants' Qualifications and Experience:

Applicants must have a suitable M. Sc. degree. Experience with
electronic hardware is essential for this position.

Preferred applicants have:

- An M. Sc. degree in a relevant engineering discipline: electronics,
robotics, mechatronics, or equivalent

- Experience with construction and programming of robotic prototypes

- Interest in supporting bachelor and master level student projects,
as well as the research staff

- Experience of interacting with external fabricators -- specification
and management of external tasks

- Experience with hardware design, programmable hardware and embedded
programming.

- Experience with FPGA design in either VHDL or Verilog.

Requirements for the position
The required qualification is graduate level.

Shortlisting may be used. Shortlisted applicants will be assessed by an assessment panel.

An interview might be part of the assessment process.

Conditions of employment
Employment as a research assistant is temporary. The employment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.

Employment is governed by the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
