PhD Position in Functional Proteomics in Cancer Precision Medicine

Syddansk Universitet (SDU)

Ph.d. & forskning
Fyn

Workplace: Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, SDU, Odense.

Start date: During the period 15 February to 15 April 2019. Application deadline: 1 February 2019.

The candidate will be employed at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at SDU and will be enrolled in the department's PhD programme under the supervision of Prof. Ole N. Jensen.

Project description
The research project aims to develop novel approaches for early cancer detection and diagnostics by using advanced mass spectrometry and proteomics approaches. The project entails the characterization of proteins and proteomes in human kidney tissue and renal cell carcinoma tumor tissue from patients, including also protein post-translational modifications (e.g. protein phosphorylation). The candidate will develop and apply LC-MS based technologies and use advanced bioinformatics/statistics tools to characterize and identify molecular features of renal cell carcinomas in the context of precision medicine.

Ideal candidate
We are seeking outstanding candidates with documented experience in protein biochemistry and functional proteomics in the context of biomedicine. Expertise in protein mass spectrometry including LC-MS is a requirement. Candidates will be part of an international research group, and good interpersonal skills and fluency in the English language (reading/writing/speaking) are a requirement.

Group description
The Protein Research Group offers a strong international research environment in protein chemistry, biomolecular mass spectrometry, and computational proteomics with a strong focus on elucidating the functional roles of dynamic post-translational modifications of proteins. The VILLUM Center for Bioanalytical Sciences at SDU and the national PRO-MS research infrastructure provide world-class facilities for proteomics and mass spectrometry research. Recent functional proteomics studies of cells and tissues by the ON Jensen group include Tvardovskiy et al (2017) Nucleic Acids Res. 45(16):9272-9289; Rabiee et al (2017) Proteomics 17(6); Schwämmle and Jensen (2018) Bioinformatics (PMID:29635359).

Department description
SDU offers more than 60 educational programmes and has an enrolment of approximately 30,000 students. The main campus is located in Odense, the third largest city of Denmark, with easy access to city life, countryside exercising and coastal activities.

SDU Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) has a staff of 27 tenured investigators. The department is well known internationally for its top-level proteomics and biological mass spectrometry research. Other strong enabling technologies include state-of-the art next generation sequencing, metabolomics/lipidomics, bioimaging, and biocomputing.
