Department of Social Sciences and Business, Roskilde University, invites applications for its annual PhD independent research scholarship within the research area of International Studies from 1 August 2019. The position as PhD is limited to a period of 3 years.

The Doctoral School
You will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Social Sciences and Business, which provides PhD training and research within an interdisciplinary, international, and professional environment. The Doctoral School is part of a dynamic community of researchers who share a commitment to understanding society in diverse contexts of change and global engagement. Researchers come from all over the world and engage in topics that are geographically, theoretically and methodologically diverse. The Doctoral School is divided into four PhD programmes: International Studies, Business Studies, Social Studies and Public Administration.

As a PhD student you will be associated with International Studies PhD Programme. The PhD in International Studies provides an opportunity to examine politics, societies and cultures around the world and how they interact. Faculty in this program come from across the social sciences (political science, sociology, anthropology, geography, economics) and projects typically emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to international development studies, global studies, or area studies. Our aim in the IS PhD program is to educate thoughtful and analytical thinkers who are able to understand and engage in the world around them. Our program focuses on developing highly systematic thinkers whether they use qualitative or quantitative methods, and we prioritize the combination of holistic analysis and academic rigor. PhD students in International Studies come from a wide variety of Masters Level Programs around the world. Responsibilities and tasks
The PhD position is an educational position and the main tasks are in accordance with chapter 3, Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions (

You must hold a master’s degree or equivalent within a social sciences discipline, such as political science, international relations, economics, development studies, sociology, anthropology or area studies. Qualifications within the following areas are required

  • High grades in a master degree within the social sciences
  • High proficiency in the English language

We also emphasize the following qualifications:

  • Sufficient methodological proficiency
  • Prior research experience (bearing in mind that the project must not duplicate the applicant’s prior research)

You are required to be enterprising and to possess good communication skills and to be a visible, involved participant in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.

In the assessment regarding enrollment consideration will also be given to the following criteria:

  • Educational skills and any further professional qualifications
  • Grades at Master’s programme or equivalent
  • Quality and relevance of the project description
  • The project description should include discussion of the field of study and problem area, review of the relevant literature, discussion of theoretical approach and tentative research design (methodology), ethical considerations, and a time schedule indicating how the applicant plans to complete the research proposed within a three-year time period.
  • Your project description shall be no more than 5 pages excluding reference list.
  • Quality and relevance of the methodical and theoretical choices
  • Consistency and coherence between the problem and the choice of method and theory
  • If the PhD project seem realistic and feasible for a 3 year PhD
  • Ability to complete the PhD project
  • Relevance of the project to the profile of the Doctoral School and the Department, and preferably commitment of appropriate supervisor within the Department.

Terms of employment
The employment is full time. Apart from working on your PhD thesis, it is expected that you take relevant university courses equivalent to 30 ECTS points and participate in teaching at the Department.

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

Application procedure
After the deadline for applications the Head of Department will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.

Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.

The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and - later on - their assessment.

Once the recruitment process is completed, all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.

Applications must include:

    • Cover letter, maximum 1 page.
    • CV, maximum length of 5 pages that summarizes the applicant’s academic experience.
    • Documentation of education including grades from Master’s programme or equivalent. The written evaluation of the thesis may be included.
    • Research proposal, maximum length of 5 pages excluding reference list. The proposal should be single spaced, using Times New Roman size 12 font, 2 cm margins on all sides, numbered pages, and with a header stating the applicant’s name.
    • Preferably a detailed letter of support form a full-time department faculty member (Associate Professor or Professor) who will act as the main supervisor if the project is successful. This letter should identify the strengths of the project, its potential limitations, how these limitations might be overcome and how well the project fits into the research environment at the department. Foreign students may send a recommendation letter from their home institution to the department-faculty member who will write their support letter for this application.

    Please note the page limits for the proposal and CV and do not exceed it. Any additional documents that are not listed under the 5 items or pages exceeding the maximum length will not be considered.
