PhD position on Silicon Photonic Integrated Circuits for Optical Processing Aided Artificial Intelligence

We offer a full PhD position within the topic of using silicon photonic integrated circuits (PICs) to perform key computational processes optically in order to greatly enhance the computational speed and energy efficiency of artificial intelligence based algorithms. Significant effort has been made towards developing electronic architectures tuned to implement artificial neural networks and perform certain artificial intelligence (AI) task. This project will explore a new architecture, where part of the computational processing needed to perform a certain AI task, such as inference, will be implemented optically rather than electronically, enabling an improvement in processing speed and energy efficiency. The optical processing will be implemented using silicon PICs, which will be developed within this PhD project. This project is part of a Villum Young Investigator project on energy-efficient optical communications in the 2-micron wavelength range (2MAC).

The Ph.D. project will be carried out in the High Speed Optical Communications group (HSOC) in the Department of Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. There is access to state-of-the-art experimental facilities and cleanroom facilities. The HSOC group is highly international and encourages collaborative work and an informal working environment.

Project description
The PhD candidate will design and fabricate silicon photonic integrated circuits and use them for artificial intelligence and artificial neural networks.

The PhD student will explore the design and fabrication of large-scale silicon photonic integrated circuits (PICs), including multimode interferometer (MMI), star couplers, energy-efficient thermal-optical phase shifters, meshes of single-mode waveguides and an interconnected array of Mach–Zehnder interferometers. The work will also include the characterization of the fabricated silicon PICs. The fabricated silicon PICs will be used to implement arbitrary matrices in an optimally compact form. Hybrid design of PICs and microelectronics will also be considered.

As part of the Danish PhD program the student will follow a number of PhD courses. Furthermore, there will be the opportunity to carry out an external research stay at another research group. We have close collaborations with numerous internationally leading universities and research organizations.

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
