At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, one or more PhD stipends are available within the general research programme Wireless Communications. The stipends are open for appointment from March 1, 2019, or soon hereafter.

Job description
Millimeter-wave (mm-wave) antenna arrays will be massively implemented in future communication systems, such as: cube satellites, cellular systems, mobile-satellite communications. In space applications, cube-satellite solutions must meet flexible customer requirements (e.g. frequency bands, data rates, and inter-sat links) in a cost-efficient way. Current solutions are based largely on UHF technology, which results in too large antennas and power requirements exceeding limitations.

Clearly, there is a need for new enabling communication technology to accommodate these needs. Cm-/mm-wave antenna arrays are very suitable candidates to realize innovative antenna systems and radio-frequency circuits, where the antenna arrays should possess high gain and steerable beam with low cost. In 5G mobile cellular systems, cmwave and mmwave is also one of the key technologies. In addition, meta-surfaces/meta-materials have been developed for many years, which can be utilized to further improve the performance of cmwave and mmwave antennas/arrays.

The successful candidate should have extensive knowledge in centimeter-wave and millimeter-wave antenna arrays for satellite and radio communication as well as meta-surfaces/meta-materials. Applicants with proven publication record are desirable, especially in high ranking IEEE Trans. journals. Further, a strong background in antennas, numerical simulations, and experimental implementations is expected. Applicants for the PhD position should hold a relevant Master's Degree in Engineering.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT adn Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
