Center for Translational Neuromedicine (CTN), University of Copenhagen, is looking for a highly motivated PhD Fellow to join us from 1 April 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. Center for Translational Neuromedicine currently has 50 employees and students and is divided into two labs. CTN is characterized by a highly ambitious research environment. The PhD Fellow will be part of the Nedergaard lab.

Being part of the Nedergaard lab offers an opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary lab engaged in neuroscience with a focus on the basic biology of glial cells in the CNS and the role of astrocytes in several neurological diseases, including stroke, spinal cord injury, epilepsy, tremor, and ALS. Research is aimed at defining new strategies for the treatment of neurological diseases that target astrocytic dysfunction.

CTN is part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, and is located at Panum. The Center comprises modern laboratories and excellent facilities within neuroscience.

Applications are invited for a three-year fellowship from applicants with a master’s degree in Molecular Biomedicine or a field relevant to the following PhD project: “Investigation of the role of brain state on glymphatic function”.

Project description
The project is focused on investigating how global and cellular shifts between wakefulness and sleep interact with glymphatic clearance of the brain. Using a wide range of in vivo imaging techniques as well as transgenic reporter mice, the candidate will investigate how wakefulness and sleep states impact astrocyte function and signaling, cerebrospinal fluid flow dynamics, as well as extracellular space environment. The project will require extensive experience in EEG measurements and sleep scoring and analysis, PET/SPECT imaging, CT imaging, and immunohistochemistry. The candidate should be experienced in performing surgical procedures on rodents including EEG implantation and surgical preparations for in vivo imaging. Experience in brain cannula implantation is a plus. Candidates with previous knowledge on the glymphatic system and brain clearance will be preferred. Knowledge and experience in image analysis and basic programming are highly desired. The chosen candidate should present with a keen interest in neuroscience, sleep research and in vivo work, and be able to perform image analysis, prepare figures, statistical analysis and present the data on international meetings.

Required qualifications
The applicant must have:

  • A Master’s degree in Molecular Biomedicine or other relevant field
  • Experience in PET/SPECT imaging and handling of radioactive tracers
  • Experience in EEG measurements and sleep scoring
  • Training in rodent surgery including stereotaxic surgeries, EEG implantation, and head plate preparations for in vivo imaging
  • Experience in immunohistochemistry
  • Experience in quantitative image analysis
  • Fluency in English

Supervisor
Your main supervisor will be Professor Maiken Nedergaard, Center for Translational Neuromedicine.

General job description

Your key tasks as a PhD fellow at CTN are to:

  • Manage and carry through your research project
  • Take PhD courses
  • Write scientific publications based on data collection
  • Development and maintenance transgenic mouse lines
  • Recording EEG in freely moving animals or concurrent with in vivo imaging
  • Sleep scoring and sleep analysis
  • Imaging of astrocytic calcium activity
  • Quantitative analysis of image time-stacks
  • Statistical analysis of data

Formal requirements
The position is available for a three-year period.

The successful applicant will be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences according to the rules stipulated in the Ministerial order on the PhD programme at the universities (PhD order) from the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Higher Education and the guidelines for the PhD programme at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.

Terms of employment
Salary and other terms of employment are stated in the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

Questions
For further information, applicants may contact the supervisor Professor Maiken Nedergaard, nedergaard@sund.ku.dk or Administrator Ann Christensen, ann.christensen@sund.ku.dk.

How to apply
Only online applications are accepted. The following must be included:

  • Cover letter stating the interest in and qualifications for the project (max. 1 page)
  • Full CV
  • Diploma and transcripts of records, both from Bachelor’s and Master’s degree
  • Publication list
  • Possible references

Application deadline is 19 February 2019.

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an expert assessment committee.
