At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Energy Technology a position as postdoc in power electronics is open for appointment from April 1, 2019 or soon hereafter. The position is available for a period of 2 years. The Department of Energy Technology is an expanding department covering most fields of Energy Technology ranging from electrical energy (Power Systems, Power Electronics, and Electrical Machines) to thermal energy including Energy Systems and Fluid Mechanics and Combustion but also mechatronic systems. The department has about 280 employees – out of them are more than 100 Ph.D. students. The laboratory-facilities are world-class and the research carried out are most often in collaboration with industry. The position is related to the research program of Efficient and Reliable Power Electronics and the postdoc research fellow will be positioned to the section for Power Electronic Systems.

Job description
The postdoc position is a part of a research grant on REliable Power Electronic based Power System (REPEPS) from the Villum Foundation Investigator programme running from 2017 to 2023, which is awarded to Professor Frede Blaabjerg. The overall goal is to develop new methods for ensuring reliable and safe operations of power electronic based power systems. An integrated reliability assessment tool, which can incorporate both the physical characteristics of hardware components and control software optimization at the system level, will be developed for predicting the lifetime of power electronic based power systems. New insights into the mutual interactions of power electronic converters at multiple time scales will be revealed to leverage the control effects of power electronics for power grid stabilization and protection. Developing advanced multi-time scale modeling methodology in order to analyze uncertainty and sensitivity of power electronics system at different time-constants is required for better lifetime prediction of power converter.

Research areas for this postdoc position will particularly be within renewable power generation with focus on wind turbines and wind farms as a power electronics based power system. Experience in control, analysis, and multivariable modeling of renewable power generation, including steady-state, dynamic, transient, and thermal modeling, multiple eigenvalue sensitivity analysis, multi-objective optimization techniques, estimation, mapping mission profile and hardware prototyping are of high interests.

More specifically, a successful applicant should document strong ability in terms of:
• Multi-time scale modeling of wind systems from wind turbines to wind farms under steady-state and transient conditions. It could also be PV power plants.
• Multivariable (multi-input multi-output) dynamic modeling of renewable energy systems
• Steady state analysis including load flow- and short circuit calculations and dynamic analysis including frequency-domain modeling.
• Sensitivity analysis under different conditions and disturbances, including multiple eigenvalue sensitivity analysis
• Familiar with multi-objective optimization tools and curve fitting techniques
• Knowledge of PWM techniques, vector control, PLL grid synchronization, model predictive control, instantaneous power theory, multivariable feedback control, PQ capability, grid codes, and LVRT.
• Experience in MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, and DIgSILENT Power Factory is preferred
• Hardware prototyping and validation of the analysis, including PCB design (IGBT gate-drivers, current and voltage sensors, power supply boards) and real-time simulator in DSP, dSPACE, and RTDS (Hardware In the Loop)
• Outreach and dissemination.

For the moment more than 10 researchers are involved and it is expected that between 15 to 25 researchers will be involved in REPEPS and the research environment is very international oriented.

Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
