At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Energy Technology a position as Postdoc in Observability and Diagnosis of Smart Distribution Grids with High Penetration of Distributed Energy Resources is open for appointment from 1.April 2019 or soon thereafter. The position will available for a periode of up to two years. However, the position will end no later than 30. June 2021. The Department of Energy Technology is an expanding department covering most fields of Energy Technology ranging from electrical energy (Power Systems, Power Electronics, Electrical Machines to thermal energy including Energy Systems and Fluid Mechanics and Combustion but also mechatronic systems. The department has about 280 employees – out of them are more than 100 Ph.D. students. The laboratory-facilities are world-class and the research carried out are most often in collaboration with industry. The position is offered in relation to the research program “Intelligent Energy Systems and Active Networks" and the PostDoc will be positioned in the section for Electric Power Systems.

Job description
The research activities are in the framework of the H2020 Project Net2DG (Leveraging Networked Data for the Digital electricity Grid) running from January 2018 to July 2021. The objective of this project is to develop a proof-of-concept solution on off-the-shelf computing hardware that uses existing communication technologies to leverage measurement functionality from Smart Meters and Dispersed Energy Resources inverters in the power grid. The Net2DG solution correlates this data with information from existing Distribution System Operator subsystems, in order to enable and develop novel observability applications for voltage quality, grid operation efficiency, and grid outage diagnosis.

The candidate for this position shall have a PhD degree in electrical engineering and should document strong proficiencies in the following research fields: i) monitoring, control and operation of distribution grids with high penetration of distributed energy resources; ii) modelling of unbalanced power systems including asymmetrical faults; iii) Real-Time Digital Simulation of power grids including assets.

Documented experience in the following areas is an advantage: i) prototyping, design, testing and implementation of algorithms on target hardware; ii) smart grid communication protocols; iii) CHIL&PHIL with Opal-RT systems. The candidate must be able to work in cooperation with other researchers and industrial experts as part of a research and innovation project.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
