At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Energy Technology a position as postdoc in power electronics is open for appointment from April 1, 2019, or soon hereafter. The position is available for a period of 2 years. The Department of Energy Technology is an expanding department covering most fields of Energy Technology ranging from electrical energy (Power Systems, Power Electronics, and Electrical Machines) to thermal energy including Energy Systems and Fluid Mechanics and Combustion but also mechatronic systems. The department has about 280 employees – out of them are more than 100 Ph.D. students. The laboratory-facilities are world-class and the research carried out are most often in collaboration with industry. The position is related to the research program of Efficient and Reliable Power Electronics and the postdoc research fellow will be positioned to the section for Power Electronic Systems.

Job description
The postdoc position is a part of a research grant on REliable Power Electronic based Power System (REPEPS) from the Villum Foundation Investigator programme running from 2017 to 2023, which is awarded to Professor Frede Blaabjerg. The overall goal is to develop new methods for ensuring reliable and safe operations of power electronic based power systems. An integrated reliability assessment tool, which can incorporate both the physical characteristics of hardware components and control software optimization at the system level, will be developed for predicting the lifetime of power electronic based power systems. New insights into the mutual interactions of power electronic converters need to be revealed to leverage the control effects of power electronics for power grid stabilization and protection as well as hardening of the overall system. Trends are also moving towards virtual synchronous generator operation incl their real time aggregation. How to set the parameters dependent on power system structure is of high importance as well as dynamically changing them in operation.

Research areas for this postdoc position will be within power electronics and power electronic-based power systems. Having a solid background in analysis, modeling and control of multiple parallel connected power converters at both small-scale (i.e., microgrid) and large-scale (renewable based power plants) ac/dc power systems are important. Risk assessment approaches in power electronic-based power systems is of high interest incl from a fundamental control perspective

More specifically, a successful applicant should document strong abilities in most of the terms of:
• Modeling, control and stability analysis of power converters and power electronic-based power systems. Experience with both grid-feeding and grid-forming converters
• Power management and control in AC grid structure (such as primary, secondary and tertiary control approaches)
• Renewable-based distributed generation operation, synchronization and control
• Virtual synchronous generator systems and their aggregation
• Reliability and risk assessment in power electronic-based power systems
• Insight in influence on communication delays in such systems
• Artificial intelligence applied in control
• Hardware prototyping and validation of the analysis
• Outreach and dissemination.

For the moment more than 10 researchers are involved and it is expected that between 15 to 25 researchers will be involved in REPEPS and the research environment is very international oriented.

Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University. The application must contain the following:
