One or more PhD Stipends in Machine Learning for Wireless Communications (8-19015)

Aalborg Universitet (AAU)

Ph.d. & forskning

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, one ore more PhD stipends in Ultra-reliable Low Latency Connectivity are available within the general study programme Wireless Communications. The stipends are open for appointment at the latest September 1, 2019.

Job description
WINDMILL Early Stage Researcher 9: Optimizing URLLC metadata/data flows using machine learning
Aalborg University is seeking to hire an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) to join the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network on “Integrating Wireless Communication ENgineering and MachIne Learning”.(WindMill). More details are included

The project offers an excellent research and training programme:

  • Opportunity to join a network of leading Universities, research institutes and companies in the field of wireless communications and machine learning.
  • The ESR is primarily hosted by Aalborg University, campus in Copenhagen, with stays in partner institutions (secondments).
  • Training programme including regular summer and winter schools to build technical skills as well as soft skills.
  • The salaries are very competitive and composed by the following allowances: living, mobility and family (the latest only if eligible, see criteria of eligibility in the project’s website).

The ESR will be enrolled in the PhD programme at Aalborg University. The supervision team includes: Prof. Cedomir Stefanovic, Prof. Elisabeth de Carvalho, and Prof. Petar Popovski. The PhD project will focus on augmenting the wireless access networking with machine learning (ML) in order to lower latency and improve reliability. The specific objectives of the PhD project are: (1) Identification and extraction of side information from the observed metadata/data exchanges through the use of ML techniques; (2) Development of methods for joint encoding of data and metadata and for reducing the number protocol exchanges based on side-information; (2) Analysis of the theoretical bounds of the improvements in latency/reliability that can be obtained by using the anticipatory protocol information;

Eligibility Requirements

Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status (under the 1951 Geneva Convention and the 1967 Protocol) are not taken into account.
    • An undergraduate degree and Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science.
    • Strong background in wireless communications and/or machine learning. Strong mathematical skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication, as well as presentation skills.
    • Highly proficient English language skills.
    • Excellent organisational skills, creative, innovative, independent thinker.
    • Motivation to collaborate in an interdisciplinary international team.

    • A Curriculum Vitae including education qualifications, research and industrial experience, awards and fellowships, any additional scientific achievements.
      1. A list of publications.
      2. A copy of the Master’s certificate (or equivalent).
      3. An official transcript of the completed subjects and grades achieved in the course of the Master’s programme.
      4. Documentation of English skills (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, CAE or CPE).
      5. Emails of at least 2 researchers familiar with the academic activities of the candidate, e.g. the advisor of your Master’s thesis.
      6. A one-page description of the research as envisioned by the candidate.
If considered for the position, you will be requested to prove that you comply with those requirements.
