Research assistant/Post Doc for Hydraulic Laboratory

This position is a part of the research project DEWIOS that investigates extreme wave kinematics and loads on offshore structures, and located in the coastal group of the section for Fluid Mechanics, Coastal and Maritime Eng. The objectives are to enhance and improve the experimental methods for wave structural interaction, conduct experimental research, and improve the workflow in the hydraulic laboratory.

Responsibilities and tasks
Several of the proposed PhD-studies in the DEWIOS project need detailed and accurate measurements of waves, breaking waves and their interaction with structures. To support the research and to carry out independent research related to the project, we will employ a Research assistant/Post doc for our hydraulic laboratory at DTU.

The Research assistant/Post doc shall undertake development of measurement techniques that includes PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry), surface measurements, measurements of air-content, and measurements of wave loads on model scale structures. The will work be carried out in close collaboration with faculty, researchers, PhD-students as well as with MSc-students.

  • Design of physical models
  • Implementing and testing of experimental model set-up
  • Conducting physical model test
  • Assisting in development of advanced measuring technologies in breaking waves
  • Co-supervisor for master-projects
  • Assistance with laboratory courses, and other courses related to laboratory work
  • Contribute to scientific publications and reports

Qualifications
Candidates for a

  • Research assistant position must hold a MSc-degree in Civil/Marine Engineering with specialization in marine structures (or equivalent)
  • Post doc position must hold a PhD-degree in in Civil/Marine Engineering with specialization in marine structures (or equivalent)
  • Excellent programming capabilities in for instance MATLAB;
  • Excellent capabilities in experimental research

The following soft skills are also important:

  • Good communication skills in English, both written and orally;
  • Willingness to engage in group-work with a multi-national team;
  • Pro-active personality

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:

  • Solid experience with physical model experiments and/or experimental research
  • Documented research capabilities
  • Some experience with teaching
  • Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 2 years.
