At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Civil Engineering, a PhD stipend is available within the general research programme Civil Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from May 1, 2019 or soon hereafter.

Job description
In the division of Structural, Materials and Geotechnics a PhD stipend is available in the research area dealing with offshore foundation of wind turbines.

To produce cost-efficient wind energy in a highly competitive market the cost per MWh must be reduced. This requires the development of new technology and bigger wind turbines. However, in Denmark, Britain and neighbouring countries, such turbines can only to a limited extent be accommodated on land and within the near-shore sector of the North Sea.

This leads to a requirement for new solutions on deeper water. A particular problem is related to the design of wind turbine foundations. At present the foundations for offshore wind turbines are responsible for approximately 1/3 of the total costs, and as the water depth increases, the cost of the foundations will constitute an even bigger part of the total budget.

This PhD stipend is funded by H2020 program via the project I4Offshore. The i4offshore project focuses on developping an innovative Jacker foundation for a +10 MW wind turbine. The overall objectives are the high performance innovative design of a beyond-state-of-the-art jacket. The aim of the PhD project is to study and develop a new foundations bucket concept.

The work is carried out in a research community with participation numerous external partners from universities and industry. The PhD project will focus develop an analysis model of the soil structure interaction that allows a faster and more efficient design of the structure and foundation. The main focus will be on model testing combined with development of constitutive models and numerical calculations.

Qualifications:
The applicant must hold an MSc degree in geotechnical engineering or structural civil engineering. In particular, the applicant should be familiar with the solution of problems related to engineering geology, soil mechanics, foundation design, and computational methods. In particular the applicant must have strong experience in experimental and numerical works in relation to soil mechanic, model testing.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

Appointment and salary as a PhD fellow are according to the Ministry of Finance Circular of November 10, 2015 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding PhD fellows, and with the Ministry of Finance current circular on the employment structure at Danish Universities.
