Scientist for regional ocean modelling

A new full time position within regional ocean modelling is established at the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI).

The successful applicant will be a part of a team working with operational ocean modelling and reanalysis simulations. The focus of this position is on ocean model setup, execution and analysis, and scientific presentation of results. The region of interest is the North Sea – Baltic Sea, and we use the HBM and NEMO ocean models.

The work will be partly financed by the CMEMS BAL MFC and CLAIM projects. The CMEMS BAL MFC project is tasked to produce model forecasts and reanalysis of the Baltic Sea, and within the CLAIM project focus is on modelling micro plastics as a tracer in the ocean. You will be working in a stimulating research environment including international collaboration and will be part of a research team working with oceanography and modelling at DMI.

Expected qualifications:

  • Master or PhD degree in oceanography, geophysics, engineering or similar
  • Highly analytical
  • Programming skills with Fortran in a UNIX environment is necessary, some experience with e.g. Python and shell scripts are an advantage
  • Experience with HBM, NEMO or data assimilation is an advantage
  • Good communication skills in oral and written English are essential
  • Capacity of working in a team together with your colleagues.

The Research Department at DMI employs a staff of approx. 60 scientists, of which approximately 10 work with oceanography, in close collaboration with meteorologists, climate scientists and remote sensing experts. We have a strong international profile, which is also reflected in the many nationalities here and in an English working language.

Practical information
Employment and salary: Will be according to the Danish Law and Agreements. It will be possible to apply for an addition to the basic salary. The position is a temporary full-time employment limited until March 31, 2021. There is a possibility for extension pending on funding possibility

Working time: 37 hours weekly including a lunch break and 6 weeks of paid vacation annually after one year of employment
