The Department of Technology and Innovation (ITI), University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in Odense, invites applications for vacant positions as assistant professor(s) in Civil and Architectural Engineering. The appointment as assistant professor is for a 3-year period. The position is open now and the start date is as soon as possible but negotiable and preferably no later than 1 September 2019.

We are recruiting world-class researchers in order to expand research and strengthen collaborations with Danish and international industry.

The positions are assigned to SDU Civil and Architectural Engineering - a young, interdisciplinary unit at the Department of Technology and Innovation in Odense, Denmark. Civil and Architectural Engineering is a strategic priority area at SDU. We have strong competencies in civil engineering and the successful applicant will be able to contribute to and preferably build upon existing areas, working with leadership to expand and strengthen our research for high performance building and sustainable urbanisation.

We are recruiting candidates to our existing education and research activities (see homepage for details) and also developing the following research focus areas, where candidates are especially welcome:
• Timber Technology and Engineering;
• Building Dynamics and Transformable Design;
• Computational Design and Digital Fabrication;
• Façade Design and Engineering;
• Urban Resilience.

Timber Technology and Engineering as well as Building Dynamics and Transformable Design are currently areas of high priority and will represent significant opportunities for the right candidates.

Building Dynamics
The ongoing digitalisation of the built environment and ideas of the building as intelligent are forming a trend towards the convergence of architecture and robotics. Flexibility and movement of building parts that are traditionally understood as static provide opportunities for a building to adapt to changes in its external and internal environments, to optimise its layout, and to assist occupants in their routines. New strategies for movement, new building materials and new methods of fabrication allow for more holistic approaches to such building dynamics. A challenge for architectural engineers is to integrate such strategies for movement in the overall building design, considering feasibility, functionality and the other specialist disciplines that contribute to building design.

Timber Technology and Engineering
The current international wave of high tech timber architecture and construction is likely to have a significant impact on the future of construction. Denmark has a strong tradition in concrete construction and timber is – by comparison – less developed. Modern timber technologies offer advantages including potential carbon sequestration, speed of construction, less noise and less mess during construction, high precision, and a material with an architectural finish that can be exposed with desired aesthetics. While there is still a strong tradition in timber and wood workmanship in Denmark, the education of engineers in timber structures and timber construction is limited. There is thus an opportunity to develop a capacity to assess the merits of timber as a modern construction technology and offer education in the design and construction of novel timber structures utilising technologies such as cross-laminated timber and digital fabrication.

The section contributes significantly to the following educational programmes:
• BEng in Civil Engineering;
• MSc in Structural Engineering.

The successful candidate will be expected to:
• Develop and engage in top tier research with local colleagues and international peers;
• Actively participate in attracting external research funding;
• Actively participate in developing the educational programmes;
• Provide outstanding education at all university level courses;
• Supervise students and, depending on level, develop junior staff.

The candidate must have a PhD or equivalent.

Commensurate with the academic rank of the position applied for, the candidates must have:
• An outstanding research and publication record in fields relevant to the position;
• Extensive experience with industrial collaboration;
• Strong record of accomplishment of attracting research funding.

Industry experience as a designer is desirable, but not a formal requirement.

Being able to lecture in Danish is an advantage.

In addition, experience in innovation and bringing research results to the market will be highly valued as will developing continuing education programs for executives and professionals.

Requirements for the position
Employment as an assistant professor requires scientific qualifications at PhD level.

Applications will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the Faculty. As part of the overall assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, the applicant may be called for interview.

Shortlisting may be used. Shortlisted applicants will be assessed by an assessment panel.

Conditions of employment
Employment as assistant professor is a 3-year temporary position. The employment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
