A two year postdoc position in ocean observation technology is available at the National Instituteof Aquatic Resources at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Aqua) with starting in 2019. The project work will primarily be carried out at the Section for Oceans and Arctic at DTU Aqua, which is located in Kongens Lyngby, Denmark. The section for Oceans and Arctic is focused onresearch in the marine environment. The research spectrum is broad covering marine ecology, oceanography, observation technology and Arctic science. The research area in oceanobservation technology has a special focus on autonomous systems and adaptive sampling withplatforms ranging from small underwater vehicles to large research vessels and data acquisitionbased on acoustic, chemical and visual sensors.

The research field is autonomous marine systems for environmental mapping. The past twodecades have seen a growing proliferation and maturation of autonomous marine sciencetechnology that has made possible the widespread collection of previously unavailable and high-resolution data. Autonomous marine vehicles, acoustic, visual and chemical sensors as well ascommunication systems are reaching areas and gathering data previously inaccessible. It isimperative to integrate such solutions towards operational and coast effective systems to expandour capacity of ocean observations.

Responsibilities and tasks
The successful applicant will support the development of marine robotics activities at DTU Aqua. This will include integration of acoustic and water quality sensors as well as appropriate communication systems on available ROV platforms to operate in an autonomous and cooperative mode. Development of automated planning and scheduling frameworks, as well as development of adaptive sampling strategies for biotic and abiotic marine variables is required. Autonomous detection of ocean features and object identifications will be embedded on the vehicles for navigation and sampling tasks.

The postdoc will be part of a collaboration between DTU Aqua, DTU Elektro and DTU Compute as well as in support of international collaborations with, e.g., the Center for Marine Environmental Sciences (MARUM) at the University of Bremen, Germany. The postdoc position will support ongoing DTU Aqua and Elektro projects SENTINEL (cognitive robotic systems) and REMORA (modular underwater robotics). Support to teaching and supervision activities at DTU in the courses on aquatic field work and sensor integration will be required.

Candidates should have a PhD in oceanography, electronics, automation and control systems or similar qualifications with an academic level equivalent to a three-year PhD.

We are looking for a candidate who has:

  • Previous experience in mission planning frameworks for autonomous marine vehicles
  • Proved skills in handling and operating autonomous underwater systems
  • Ability of handling and processing large amounts of data
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Mathematical modelling skills and experience in PYHTON, ROS, MATLAB or other programming languages would be advantageous

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is two years and the work will primarily be carried out at the Section for Oceans and Arctic at DTU Aqua, which is located in Kongens Lyngby, Denmark.

Specific field work activities might include periods of permanence on research vessels.

The research spectrum of the Section for Oceans and Arctic covers oceanography, population ecology, observation technology and the Arctic. The research into oceanography integrates biological, physical and chemical parameters’ interactions in the ocean, ranging from individual plankton to regional seas. We focus on understanding the key processes that govern the structure and function of pelagic food webs, as well as climate and ecosystem interactions. The research in population ecology establishes how processes affecting individuals shape populations and ecosystems.
