At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, one ore more PhD stipends in Millimeter-wave electronics for Nano-satellite communications are available within the general study programme Wireless systems. The stipends are open for appointment from 1st April 2019 or soon as possible thereafter.

Job description
Nano-satellites are miniaturized satellites that usually consist of one or a few cubic units with the dimension of 10×10×10 cm3 and have a mass between 1 and 10 kg. Due to the small size, low weight and the flexibility to use commercial Off-The-Shef (COTS) components nano-satellites are cost effective. And hence they had been widely used for education, evaluation of high risk advanced space technologies etc.

Driven by the technology advances, the capability of nano-satellite has been growing remarkably and it has also become a promising solution for commercial applications such as ship and flight tracking. On another hand, there is also growing commercial need for high-performance and low cost satellites for a wide range of applications, such as low earth obit (LEO) satellite constellations for spaced based Internet of things (IoT) or global high speed data access. In order to fulfill these needs, K-band space borne radios are desired for feasible link budget and at the same time fit into the limited space available on the nano-satellites.

The task for the PhD candidate is to derive techniques for the development and optimization of power efficient K-band electronics, especially power amplifiers for Nano-satellite communications. The successful candidate should have extensive experience in RF and microwave power amplifiers for wireless communication systems including 5G, LTE, UMTS and GSM. Knowledge about multiple antenna systems and active arrays are mandatory. Experience with bench marking of different technologies for RF filters, Switches, LNA and transceivers would be an advantage. Moreover, the candidate should hold a Master's Degree relevant to power amplifiers. And also the candidate should have excellent written and presentation skills in English.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT adn Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

Appointment and salary as a PhD fellow are according to the Ministry of Finance Circular of November 10, 2015 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding PhD fellows, and with the Ministry of Finance current circular on the employment structure at Danish Universities.
