The H2020 project GOJelly: a gelatinous solution to plastic pollution, aims to develop, test and promote a gelatinous solution to microplastic pollution by developing a prototype microplastic filter (“GoJelly” biofilter) for commercial and public use, where the main raw material is jellyfish mucus. Moreover, GoJelly will consider JF bloom not only as a pest, but rather as a novel valuable resource for the food and feed industry and as agro-biological fertilizer for organic farming (green innovation). In addition, innovative JF products will be developed for application in cosmetics, nutraceutics and medicine (biotech innovation).

On the other hand, there is still a huge knowledge gap about jellyfish, their bloom forming and their role in marine food webs. Jellyfish blooms are associated with climate change, eutrophication and a decrease in commercially important fish stocks. Thus, the project is also aiming on filling these gaps to better understand the general role of jellyfish in food webs, with a special focus on the trophic interactions of jellyfish and fish in different pelagic habitats in several case study areas.

In this context the Department of Biology at SDU is looking for a PhD candidate with an MSc degree in Biological Oceanography or Marine Biology who should be experienced in marine ecology, food web ecology, fish and jellyfish biology. Special focus lays on analysing different food web compartments (from phyto- and microzooplankton to marine nekton) with the help of analysing biomolecules such as stable isotopes and fatty acids. By applying both mesocosm studies and sea-going research we hope to gain a holistic view on factors contributing to the jellyfish bloom and the extent of fish-jellyfish interactions.

The successful candidate will assist a scientific team consisting of GoJelly partners (SDU, GEOMAR, Hamburg University, NTNU Norway, Haifa Uni. in Israel, NIB in Slovenia) in coordinating and conducting food web sampling. She/he should take care of organisation of sampling in different EU water bodies as well as of transport and lab analyses. Joint research cruises and in partner countries is a special task that needs to be fulfilled. In addition, set-ups of jellyfish aquacultures (as well as maintaining feed cultures of algae and copepods) and analysing the ecological data on jellyfish-fish interactions needs to be performed by the candidate.

Responsibilities include:

  • Food web sampling in the Baltic, Norwegian, Adriatic and East Mediterranean seas
  • Preparing sampling equipment (multi-nets, Bongo) for research cruises independently
  • Arrangement of lab facilities for extracting and independent analysing of fatty acids (FAME) and stable isotopes (CNS)
  • Assisting in setup and maintenance of new jellyfish cultures in mesocosm facilities including feed cultures
  • Assisting in time series sampling in Kiel Fjord (GEOMAR)
  • Data analysis and reporting

Admissiong requirements:
The ideal candidate will have an MSc Degree in Biological Oceanography, Marine Science, Marine Ecology or equivalent, as well as previous experience relevant for the project, including (but not exclusively):

  • Background and proven record in marine and experimental ecology (with focus on food webs, jellyfish and fish biology)
  • Research cruise experience (fisheries and plankton sampling) including experience in handling different net gear independently
  • Previous experience in food web sampling and analyses of samples, with a focus on fatty acids and stable isotopes
  • Experience in methodology for phytoplankton analysis (Utermöhl)
  • Routine in working in laboratories and handling of sensitive samples
  • Experience in operating gas chromatographs and mass spectrometry
  • Experience with live feed cultures
  • Boating license
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently

Fluent knowledge (spoken and written) of the English language and preferably German (due to the cruises that are mainly on German vessels).
