PhD scholarships in Circular Economy (European Horizon 2020 Project “REFLOW”) at the Department of Operations Management

The Department of Operations Management at Copenhagen Business School (CBS) invites applications for two vacant PhD scholarships linked to the large European Horizon 2020 project REFLOW (constRuctive mEtabolic processes For material flOWs in urban and peri-urban environments across Europe). REFLOW has 28 European partners and is led by CBS (EC signature expected May 2019). Starting dates are expected to be in the autumn 2019.

The REFLOW project mission is to support the development of cities that are regenerative and adopt circular economy (CE) practices, through the delocalisation of production and the reconfiguration of material flows. REFLOW explores CE innovation using a digital and physical network of makerspaces and other grass-root organisations in six pilot cities: Amsterdam, Berlin, Cluj-Napoca, Milan, Paris, and Vejle. The project will provide guidance for public and private sector organisations on how to create favourable conditions for the adoption of CE practices.

REFLOW will create new CE business models within the six pilot cities in order to provide examples of ways in which cities can adopt CE practices and reach the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The project makes use of blockchain technology in order to incentivise CE practices in local ecosystems. Moreover, it will define social and environmental measurements to enable the continuous monitoring of CE practices and the assessment of their impact.

We encourage applications investigating CE practices in the field of management accounting, also combined with the operations management and innovation management fields. The REFLOW project leader and the research team, based at the Department of Operations Management, will provide a robust research community with regular meetings and an active mentorship. Successful applicants are also expected to be involved in the project work at European level in collaboration with the REFLOW team.

Research themes could include, but are not limited to:

  • Measuring the social and environmental impact of CE practices
  • Understanding process and implications of developing the CE practices in public and private sector organisations
  • Exploring valuation practices to assess the value(s) of CE
  • Investigating the changes in organisational management practices that are induced by the advent of CE and (blockchain) technology, and their ramifications for organisations and society as a whole.

Applications will be assessed based on the quality of the proposed project, as well as the skills of the candidate. The Department will give priority to applicants with high grades from their universities. Only project proposals that clearly fall in the areas of the Department will be considered.

General information:
A PhD scholarship runs for a period of 3 years and includes teaching obligations equivalent of ½ year’s work (840 work hours) in total. The scholarships are fully salaried positions, according to the national Danish collective agreement. The scholarship includes the tuition fees, office space, travel grants plus a salary, currently starting with per month DKK 23.770 (app. EUR 3,160) up to DKK 28.964 (app. EUR 3,860) depending on experience, plus a pension contribution totalling 17,1 % of 85 per cent of the base salary.

The salary level and appointment is determined by the Danish Ministry of Finance’s collective agreement with the Central Academic Organisation.

The PhD student will be enrolled at the PhD School of Business and Management:

To be considered, the candidate should have a basic training at the master’s level (similar to the 3 + 2 Bologna process). An educational background in the social sciences (e.g. business administration) is necessary. The applicant must have successfully completed the master’s degree before commencing PhD at CBS. The applicant must be fluent in English.

The application must include:

  • A project description (max 5 pages): This research proposal should contain a presentation of an original research question, a description of the initial theoretical framework and research methodology and how the project is contributing to the existing literature and hence include a short review of the state of the art within the literature. The project description should also include a presentation of the suggested empirical material as well as a work-plan. Finally a brief outline on how the project would fit within the framework of the REFLOW project.
  • Copies of a Master’s degree certificate or other certificates of a corresponding level.
  • Brief curriculum vitae (CV).
  • A list of papers and publications.
  • One copy of a selected written work (e.g. master’s thesis).
  • Documentation for English language skills if English is not mother tongue.

Recruitment procedure
The Recruitment Committee expects to shortlist at least five applicants to be assessed by the Assessment Committee. All applicants will be notified of their status in the recruitment process shortly after the application deadline.

Applicants selected for assessment will be notified about the composition of the Assessment Committee and later in the process about the result of the assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed, each applicant will be notified of the outcome of their application.
