Applications are invited from enthusiastic and talented individuals for a PhD scholarship in radiopharmaceutical chemistry and drug delivery at the Department of Health Technology at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The intended starting date is 1 March 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Project description
As a PhD candidate, you will enter the research program of the Hevesy Laboratory at DTU Health Technology, where you will join our efforts to develop innovative drug delivery systems for treating cancer with radionuclides. We design, radiolabel and synthesize radioactive drug delivery systems from scratch, using organic and inorganic chemistry, radiochemistry and nanotechnology.

Within this field, your work will focus on developing nanoparticle formulations of the highly potent, radioactive compound [125I]I-UdR, aiming to use these formulations to treat aggressive brain cancer. [125I]I-UdR is used for Auger radiotherapy, since it can insert into the DNA of cancer cells and kill them by emitting a burst of extremely short-ranged electrons. We already know that [125I]I-UdR works extremely well on the cellular level and in rats but in order to use it against brain cancer in humans, we need new nanoparticle based systems that can efficiently distribute and release the compound within the brain. You will work to develop these clinically useful nanoparticle formulations, including new chemical methods for loading and releasing [125I]I-UdR.

The developed drug delivery systems will be prepared at the Hevesy Laboratory, DTU Health Tech (Risø Campus, Denmark) as well as the CBIO group, DTU Health Tech (Lyngby Campus, Denmark). Together, we have all the necessary, state-of-the-art equipment for preparing and synthetically modifying radioactive nanoparticles. Biological testing in cells, rats and pigs will be done through our close collaborators at Odense University Hospital (Odense, Denmark), who have long-standing experience with animal testing of [125I]I-UdR. The project will involve significant travelling, including international conference attendance and at least one extended stay abroad (minimum 3 months).

You will work as part of a small team, including experienced experts in all relevant fields, dedicated to achieving this goal. The project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark.

About us
The Hevesy Laboratory is a radiochemical and radiopharmaceutical division within DTU Health Tech, with about 25 employees. The laboratory has a 16.5 MeV cyclotron equipped with a beam line for in-house production of radioisotopes for use in radioactive pharmaceuticals. The laboratory has chemistry and biology research laboratories and clean rooms, which feature state-of-the-art equipment for working with radioisotopes.

At present, the research group at the Hevesy laboratory consists of an international and dynamic team, focusing on the development of new radioactive pharmaceuticals for diagnostics and therapy. Our research is heavily interdisciplinary and features multiple collaboration partners both locally and internationally. In addition, our in-house GMP team produces radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostics and therapy, which are delivered to local hospitals as well as external collaborators. All professional communication in the research group is done in English.

Your qualifications
You must have (or be about to obtain) a master's degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, pharmacy, or similar. Further, you must:

  • Have a solid foundation in organic synthesis
  • Have an excellent command of English, both spoken and written
  • Have an excellent educational track record
  • Be driven, enthusiastic and highly ambitious

It will also be considered advantageous, but not requirements, that you:

  • Have experience with nanomedicine
  • Have experience with radiochemistry
  • Have experience with drug delivery to the brain and in general

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

The primary place of work is the Hevesy Laboratory at DTU Health Technology, Risø Campus in Roskilde.
