FusTech: Cell-cell fusion technology between eukaryotic kingdoms
The project
FusTech aims to establish a platform that can improve biotechnology and health, and at the same time facilitate our understanding of the underlying mechanisms that give rise to highly modular delivery of intracellular cargo between eukaryotic cells.

To achieve our goals, we work with Baker’s yeast as a platform, since fundamental understanding of molecular mechanisms in Baker’s yeast is far superior to other eukaryotes, and because engineering and cultivation of this organism is very efficient.

Useful skills in the project
There is no ideal candidate, and your qualifications may include one or more of the following skills (not ranked by priority)

  • Experience working with fluorescence microscopy and subcellular localization patterns.
  • Experience working with mammalian cell lines in culture.
  • Experience working with Bakers’- or unconventional yeast.
  • Experience working with synthetic systems or circuits in live cells.
  • Experience working with co-cultivations.
  • Experience working with yeast metabolism, lipid composition, or actin assembly.
  • Experience working with computational biology.
  • Perhaps you are a physicist with profound interest in molecular biology.

About you
As a student on this project, you have a proactive attitude, a collaborative mindset, and you are excited about applying synthetic biology technologies to understand cell-cell communication. You will embark a running project in state-of-the-art synthetic biology and in close day-to-day collaboration with an experienced post-doc. You will also receive training in methodologies such as flow cytometry, and you will be encouraged to take active part in shaping the project.

You will be working in the Synthetic Biology Tools for Yeast group at DTU Biosustain

  • led by Michael Krogh Jensen and Jay Keasling. Your project will be supervised by Postdoc Emil Damgaard Jensen.

This project is supported by VILLUM FONDEN under grant no. 28309 for the duration of two years. The project was launched November 1, 2019, and runs through 2021 @DTU Biosustain.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability(DTU Biosustain) is an interdisciplinary research centre that develops new knowledge and technology to support the production of bio-chemicals using microbial production with 300 employees. The center is organised with a number of Scientific Sections and Research Groups. In the Sections, researchers do basic research to determine the spectrum of chemistry that can be produced biologically. Groups have an applied / translational approach focusing on shortening the strain design and development process.
