Aalborg Universitet (AAU)

At the Facualty of Engineering and Science, Department of Materials and Prodution a PhD stipend in Innovation Policy and Digital Transformation of Manufacturing. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 August 2020 or soon hereafter. The PhD stipend is available for a period of three years and is co-financed by Sino-Danish Centre for Education and Research (SDC). The PhD project aims to enhance the pioneering research areas of innovation policy, digital transformation of manufacturing, and Denmark-China comparison and contribute to SDC’s social science research and educational activities.

Job description
The PhD project is specifically about a comparative study between Denmark and China in terms of their innovation policy for digital transformation of manufacturing. Recently, the term “digital transformation” has attracted a lot of attention throughout the media and across the manufacturing industry. It is generally defined as “the integration of digital technology into all areas of a business, resulting in fundamental changes to how businesses operate and how they deliver value to customers”. Specifically for manufacturing, it refers to a combination of traditional manufacturing processes enhanced with new advancing technologies, working together to drive manufacturing forward and address inefficiencies in the current sector. With digitalisation comes the rise of trends, e.g. industry 4.0, smart manufacturing and factories. Corresponding to these trends, both Danish and Chinese governments have released a series of programs and policies to stimulate the innovation derived from digitalisation for manufacturing industry and facilitate manufacturing companies to better carry out their digital transformation. Two example programs can be Manufacturing Academy of Denmark (MADE) from Danish side and Made in China 2025 from Chinese side. Thus, the PhD project aims to (1) evaluate whether these programs and policies stimulate the innovation related to digitalisation and positively influence the digital transformation of manufacturing in Denmark and China; (2) if so, which programs and policies play the most important roles; and (3) how programs and policies are implemented to influence manufacturing companies, both large and small/medium companies. Specifically, the PhD project aims for a comparative study between Denmark and China. In doing so, it is expected the project can contribute to understanding innovation policies for digital transformation of manufacturing from a country contingency perspective, identifying best practices from Denmark and China to facilitate the learning from each other, and providing more guidance for future policy making.
