PhD Scholarships at the Department of International Economics, Government and Business

Copenhagen Business School - CBS

PhD Scholarships at the Department of International Economics, Government and Business

Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a number of vacant PhD scholarships at the Department of International Economics, Government and Business (EGB).

Expected starting date is around October 1, 2020.

EGB is a multidisciplinary department, which conducts high-quality research in the fields of international business and political science with direct relevance to business, policy-makers and the public. Research at the department focuses on three principal themes and their interrelations:

  • States and markets
  • Firms and international business
  • Societal challenges

EGB conducts research on business and governance in the context of contemporary societal challenges, including inequality, governance challenges, ideological shifts, migration, sustainability, and technological disruption. Much of EGB’s research takes into account the political and socio-economic conditions of specific geographical regions or countries, the stages of firms’ internationalisation processes, and other factors shaping the actions of policy makers, market actors, and other stakeholders. To learn more about the research and education profile of the department, please visit the departmental homepage here.

The department calls for PhD projects in all areas covered by EGB. Theoretically, the PhD project must be anchored in the fields of political science and/or international business, broadly defined. The PhD project can be rooted in particular geographical areas or markets, such as emerging markets, or in particular societal challenges.

EGB has a vibrant PhD community, which is integrated in the daily life of the department. It is required that applicants show an interest in participating in the EGB research environment.

About the PhD Programme

The three-year PhD programme at CBS allows candidates to conduct research under the supervision of CBS faculty, supported by research training courses. The programme is highly international. Candidates are expected to participate in international research conferences and to spend time abroad as a visiting PhD student. See the CBS homepage for more information about the PhD programme, http://uk.cbs.dk/phd.

CBS PhD graduates are held in high esteem not only in academia and research institutions but also in government and business where their research qualifications are increasingly demanded. One third of CBS PhD graduates go on to employment outside universities and public research institutions. Recent EGB graduates have been successfully placed at Texas A&M University and Cornell University.

Qualifications

The department will give priority to applicants with excellent grades from their universities. CBS has a broad commitment to the excellence, distinctiveness and relevance of its teaching and research programmes. Candidates who wish to join us should demonstrate enthusiasm for working in an organisation of this type (highlighting, for example, relevant experience in academia, business, educational and dissemination activities).

At the time of enrolment, the applicant must have completed an academically relevant master’s degree according to the Bologna process (3-year bachelor’s degree (180 ECTS) and 2-year master’s degree (120 ECTS)) or equivalent qualifications. The minimum grade requirements are a weighted grade point average of at least 8.2 on the Danish 7-point grading scale for the entire programme (i.e. for both the bachelor’s and master’s studies), and at least the grade 10 on the Danish 7-point grading scale for any final thesis or equivalent examination project.

The applicant may apply for enrolment before the completion of a master’s degree. In this case, the decision of enrolment will be conditional upon the master’s degree having been successfully completed by the time of enrolment.

General Information

A PhD scholarship runs for a period of 3 years, and includes teaching obligations equivalent of ½ year’s work (840 work hours). The scholarships are fully salaried positions, according to the national Danish collective agreement. The scholarships include tuition fees, office space and travel grants.

The salary level and appointment are determined by the Ministry of Finance’s collective agreement with the Central Academic Organisation.

The application

The project description may not exceed five pages and should include the following:

  • A brief explanation of the aims of the project
  • An explanation of the issue and the hypotheses, alternatively propositions or research questions that the PhD student will work with
  • A positioning of the project in the research field of the department.
  • A description of the “state-of the art” within the project’s research field

  • An explanation of the methods to be used
  • An indication of the project’s potential contribution to the scientific field
  • A work plan (brief), which describes the main phases in the project including scheduling the elements of the PhD programme

In addition to the research proposal, the application must include copies of all diplomas/transcripts including both bachelor’s and master’s degree, including any grades obtained by the time of application if a degree has not been completed. Further, a brief curriculum vitae (CV), a list of papers and publications, and one copy of a selected written work (e.g. Master’s thesis). Applicants must enclose documentation for English language skills.
