One or more PhD positions in Control Theory (8-20025)

Aalborg Universitet (AAU)

Virksom - a-kasse og faglig organisation for selvstændige

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, one or more PhD stipends are available within the general research programme Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The stipends are open for appointment from July 1st, 2020, or soon hereafter.

Job description
The positions are open for candidates bearing an MSc degree, and it is offered in relation to the research project Smart Water Infrastructure (SWIft) by Poul Due Jensen Fond. The candidates will be team members of the Control and Optimisation Group in the Section of Automation & Control. The background in the Group stretches from engineering to mathematics. Specifically, it covers dynamical systems, control and optimisation theory, stochastic systems, and complex systems (water and electricity networks).

The research will be carried out in control theory. The operation of infrastructures requires the satisfaction of several objectives at the same time. Cost and environmental impact must be optimized while maintaining safety, delivery, and quality. Especially with the introduction of renewable power production, optimization towards electrical grid support without compromising water supply and quality is evident. Here, a trade-off between voltage, frequency, and power balance must be decided, again without compromising water supply and quality.

The standard way to solve multi-objective optimization problems is to set fixed weights between the objectives, but it is almost impossible to decide upon optimal weight factors in many practical cases. The hypothesis is that formulating multi-objective optimization as a dynamical system defined on the space of objective functions will enable the use of the tool from control as an alternative to fixed weights. The results will be applied to multi-objective problems in water distribution in cities, such as water pressure, quality, the security of supply, small consumed energy, and energy storage capacity.

The application must contain the following components:

  • A motivated text wherein the reasons for applying, qualifications in relation to the position, and intentions and visions for the position are stated.
  • A current curriculum vitae.
  • Copies of relevant diplomas.
  • Scientific qualifications. A complete list of publications must be attached with an indication of the works the applicant wishes to be considered. You may attach up to 5 publications.
  • Additional qualifications in relation to the position.
  • References/recommendations.
  • Personal data.

You may obtain further professional information from Professor Rafal Wisniewski, e-mail raf@es.aau.dk; or Professor Carsten Skovmose Kallesøe, email csk@es.aau.dk.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

For further information about stipends and salary as well as practical issues concerning the application procedure contact Ms. Lisbeth Diinhoff , The Technical Faculty of IT and Design, email: ld@adm.aau.dk, phone: +45 9940 9589.
