Postdoc in 5G Smart Production (Industrial IoT and Integration of CPS)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a position as postdoc in 5G Smart Production (Industrial IoT and Integration of CPS) is open for appointment from August 1, 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for 24 months. In the area of electronics engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the societal relevance of its research programmes. The Department of Electronic Systems employs more than 200 staff, of which about 40% are international, and about 90 enrolled PhD students. The Department hosts 620 students. The Department's excellent research infrastructures and facilities accentuate its global position in teaching and research. Department research centres around communication, antennas, control systems, signal processing, cybersecurity and acoustics. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results into practical applications with industrial partners and through IPR. Within its own subject field, the Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model.

Job description
The fourth industrial revolution - or Industry 4.0 (I4.0), will introduce major shifts in the way that products will be manufactured in the future. By integrating different Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) technologies and cloud computing; the factories of the future will be equipped with highly flexible manufacturing equipment also offering a high reliability, thereby increasing the overall production output. In order to succeed in achieving the most advanced and challenging production use cases such as non-linear de-centralized production (or “swarm production”) - where the PLCs and I/O systems in the production equipment operate in remote edge-cloud configuration, and autonomous mobile robots move items between different manufacturing modules - the use of optimized wireless technologies and positioning systems is essential.

This postdoc project focuses on the design and testing of wireless solutions targeting real operational IIoT use cases with different communication requirements: i.e. wireless operation of manufacturing execution systems in production lines or massive sensor deployments for predictive maintenance (latency-tolerant), wireless operation of sensor/actuators or control of autonomous mobile robot systems (latency critical).

The postdoc is expected to collaborate with other researchers and a number of industrial partners in the development of different IIoT prototypes and demonstrators based on real operational industrial equipment like production lines, PLCs, I/O systems, robotic arms, IoT sensors, HD cameras, AGVs, mobile robots, etc; and investigate the performance of the designed solutions over a choice of wireless technologies such as WiFi 5, public/private 4G LTE, 5G NR, WiFi 6, or LoRa which will be available at the “AAU 5G Smart Production Lab”.

Research will be primarily experimental, but analytical and modelling work is also possible based on the performance evaluation results. Active dissemination of the research findings via live demos, international conferences and high-quality journals is expected.

The ideal candidate for the position is expected to hold expertise in (at least) one of the following domains:
1) applied wireless communications,
2) robotics,
3) digital twins,
4) edge-cloud solutions;
and should be capable of conducting research in the above-described areas. Experience with operational industrial equipment, PLCs, sensors, industrial wireless communication commercial equipment, Linux, C++, Python is highly appreciated.

Qualification requirements:
Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
