Industrial PhD scholarship within MADE FAST – Integrated Circular Design for Sustainability at Grundfos

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Frist 15. juni 2020

An Industrial PhD student position (3 years) is available at the Section of Engineering Design and Product Development, within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. The position is created in connection with the MADE FAST programme.

The project is supported by the Innovation Fund Denmark (IFD), Grundfos and DTU, in the context of the MADE FAST programme. Grundfos is one the largest pump manufacturers in the world and is engaged in the development of Sustainable Product Solutions; they will be the main industrial partner on the project. The PhD student will work closely with the consortium partners and industrial stakeholders.

Responsibilities and tasks
It is the goal of this project to develop methods and tools that can help industrial companies in the early product development phase to ensure the development of the most competitive products and solutions when it comes to balanced sustainability.

The scope will be through the whole product life cycle, with special focus on manufacturing/supply chain and handling of the products/solutions at the end-of-use phase. It includes take-back approaches and the implementation of Circular Economy strategies (e.g. refurbishment, remanufacturing and recycling).

The PhD candidate is expected to develop and demonstrate concepts that provide industrial companies the best trade-off between high integration (cost leadership) and the most sustainable solutions, within a Circular Economy context.

Strong collaboration with the researchers from MADE FAST, Grundfos and industrial stakeholders is expected for the development, validation and implementation of the methods and tools. The candidate will publish his/her research results in international peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences and seminars.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

The applicant should be highly motivated and hold a master’s degree preferably within the areas of Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Design and Product Development, Environmental Engineering or related areas.

Good command of Engineering Design, written and spoken English, and experience with manufacturing companies and sustainability are required.

Further qualifications:

  • Candidate must have knowledge of Circular Economy strategies and life cycle thinking.
  • Candidate must have knowledge in at least two of the following six fields: sustainability assessment, sustainable design, mechanical engineering, trade-off analysis, and design methods.
  • Candidate must be in the first four years of his/her research career.
  • Excellent early achievement track record (publications, awards, conference presentations, etc.).
  • Strong work ethics and motivation to succeed within a competitive research field.
  • Team spirit and excellent collaboration skills.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
