The PhD project is an alliance project between DTU in Lyngby and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in South Korea. The main part of the project will be conducted at DTU Food in the research group of Microbial Biotechnology and Biorefining (MBB). During the 3 years there will be a ½ year external stay at KAIST in the laboratory of Prof. Sang Yup Lee.

In MBB there is a heavy focus on microbiology, and in particular food microbiology. We are interested in microorganisms that currently are used within the food/feed industry, and their optimization. Furthermore we look into microorganisms that have great potential within the food and feed industry and that could be used to create value from low value by-products (side-streams) of food processing.

The PhD student will be working on optimizing Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) and on developing novel fermentation technologies. Although we will focus on natural methods for optimizing LAB (adaptive evolution, classical mutagenesis), metabolic engineering tools will be used routinely as well for different purposes.

Responsibilities and tasks
In addition to the research tasks, the candidate should expect limited teaching obligations, and is moreover expected to partake in keeping the laboratory environment clean, and ensuring that laboratory equipment is being maintained.

The researcher will be involved in preparing a study plan and half-year reports, where the latter will be used to assess the PhD student, and ensure that progress is satisfactory. Other tasks will include preparing manuscripts for publication, and presenting data at conferences.

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Candidates should have documented experience with metabolic engineering and fermentation of prokaryotes with an aim to optimize production efficiency/capacity for compounds of industrial interest. Candidates with a strong background within LAB physiology/genetics are preferred. Since the project is highly interdisciplinary, the successful candidates must be prepared to learn and adapt several new methodologies. Candidates with a publication record are preferred. It is important to have a good English proficiency, and it is essential that the candidates are able to work in a team and collaborate with national and international partners.

  • MSc. Degree in Biotechnology or Life Sciences (e.g. Microbiology, Fermentation Technology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology)
  • Able to independently plan and carry out research
  • Able to interact in groups and collaborate
  • Practical experience with molecular biology and bacterial genetics
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

Applicants that have experience with Gram-positive bacteria (physiology, genetics), and that have experience with HPLC analysis of fermentation products will be favored.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in the DTU food PhD school. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
