One or more Postdoc positions in diabetic endothelial cell remodelling and physiology

Aarhus Universitet (AU)

The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for one or more positions as Postdoc in The Laboratory for Renal Cell Remodeling and Regeneration as per 1 November 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The positions are fixed-term full-time positions for 2 years with the possibility to extend.
The ideal applicant is highly motivated to study endothelial cells in diabetes, has excellent communication skills and works independently to drive own research projects. We laugh a lot and are passionate about what we do – so a positive humorous attitude and team spirit is preferred.

We offer a vibrant international research environment where English is the preferred language in the laboratory, at meetings and at seminars. The Department employs some 450 people and covers a range of research areas within Biomedicine. We contribute to the Bachelor’s degree programs in medicine, molecular medicine, odontology and the Master’s degree programs in biomedical engineering and medical chemistry. Our infrastructure is well developed with modern laboratories, core and animal facilities. You will work either in the brand new ‘Skou Building’ or similar as we are in the process of modernizing our old facilities. You can read more about the department here and about the faculty here.

About the research group
We study novel pathways of renal cell remodeling and regeneration, using (serial) intravital 2-photon microscopy of the kidney in combination with a variety of other state-of-the-art techniques, such as genetic cell fate tracing, immunohistology, optical tissue clearing techniques, electron microscopy and single cell RNA sequencing.
The Laboratory for Renal Cell Remodeling and Regeneration is led by Assistant Professor and NNF Emerging Investigator, Ina Maria Schiessl. We are supported by a major 5-year grant for the project related to the open positions, ensuring ample project funding. To learn more about the lab and our vision, please have a look at our homepage: https://biomed.au.dk/schiessl-lab/

Furthermore, the lab is integrated as part of the “Membranes” research section at the Department of Biomedicine, Aarhus University, Denmark here, which involves more than 25 excellent research groups in the field. The scientific environment is vibrant, highly collaborative and offers excellent career development programs and events.

About the research project
Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a major complication in diabetes mellitus and the primary cause of end-stage renal failure. Its pathology involves the deposition of extracellular matrix in the mesangium and the tubule-interstitium, driving progressing loss of renal function. Hyperglycemia is associated with enhanced endothelial cell plasticity, which substantially contributes to progression of DN and decline in renal function. It is therefore of up-most interest to better understand endothelial cell remodeling and signaling pathways in diabetic and control conditions.

Along these lines, the project will explore further characterization of diabetic endothelial cells using a multidisciplinary approach and state-of-the-art techniques available at the Department of Biomedicine (including intravital imaging, genetic cell fate tracing, single cell RNA-seq, proteomics and different transgenic mouse models).

Your competences

  • You have academic qualifications at PhD level, preferably within one or more of the following areas: (renal/endothelial cell) physiology and pathophysiology, (intravital) microscopy.
  • Expertise with animal models is required
  • Experience with genetic cell fate tracking, mammalian cell culture, flow cytometry, bioinformatic analyses and single-cell technologies would be beneficial. Furthermore, we expect you to demonstrate a scientific track-record.

As a person, you are ambitious, take ownership and possess good communication and interpersonal skills. We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English.
In order to be assessed as qualified for a Postdoc position, you must meet these academic criteria.
