Postdoc in Manufacturing and properties of fiber composites

Department of Wind Energy at the Technical University of Denmark is seeking a candidate for a three-year Postdoc study within manufacturing and properties of fiber composites. The study will be carried out in Section for Composite Materials (COM) that comprises state-of-the-art experimental facilities and competences covering the whole chain of manufacturing, characterization, mechanical testing and modelling of fiber composites.

The focus of the Postdoc study will be on manufacturing and characterization of composites based on fiber preforms, typically made with long/continuous glass and carbon fibers, and with a thermosetting matrix material, e.g. epoxy or polyester. COM has profound experience and knowledge in working with such composites, from their manufacturing, preparation of test samples, and to mechanical testing. This is coupled with a fundamental understanding of the special characteristics of composites, and the underlying micromechanical mechanisms controlling their properties.

Responsibilities and tasks
Are you experienced in manufacturing and testing of fiber composites, and are you interested in understanding of fundamental composite mechanisms, then perhaps you are our new Postdoc. The aim of the Postdoc study is to correlate process conditions with mechanical properties of composites. Experimental work in laboratories combined with modelling of fiber architecture and process conditions is the basic “toolbox”. Improved understanding of development of process related factors such as internal stresses and defects, and their effect on material properties are the main activities. Another part of the study will be design and development of new test elements/sub-structures for examination of e.g. preform ply-drops and overlaps, as well as investigation of process quality aspects, such as fiber wetting and permeability. The work will especially contribute to the tasks in the newly started MadeBlades project with partners from academia and industry.

  • You will contribute to maintaining the position of DTU Wind Energy as internationally leading within composites manufacturing technology for wind turbine blades.
  • You will be part of a team of about 20 employees, consisting of researchers, development engineers, PhD students and technicians working closely together.
  • You will be responsible for your own research investigations and interaction with other researchers, nationally and internationally.
  • You will thrive through publication of your scientific work in international journals.

Flexibility and self-motivation are desired skills at DTU. In addition, we expect you to be interested in collaboration and take personal responsibility for your work. Qualifications for the perfect candidate can be listed as:

  • You must hold a PhD degree within Materials Science, Mechanics or Civil Engineering.
  • You must have hands-on experience with manufacturing of composites based on long/continuous fibres (glass or carbon) and thermosetting matrix (epoxy or polyester).
  • You must have experience with characterization and testing of composites.
  • You must have worked with finite element simulation and have programing skills.
  • You must have a strong background in solid mechanics.
  • You enjoy working with complex topics and are driven by pushing boundaries.
  • You have the ability to work independently towards goals.
  • You are motivated by both individual and team accomplishments.
  • You are fluent in communicating in English, reading and writing.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 3 years at DTU Wind Energy, Risø Campus, in Roskilde.
