The position is available from 1 September 2020 (or as soon as possible thereafter).

The research project
EURDIPLO is a new research team focusing on how the European External Action Service (EEAS) makes choices, specifically when it comes to conflicting objectives. It brings together five researchers, mostly situated at the Department of Political Science and one at the think-tank Europa in Copenhagen. The team employ a variety of theories and methods. (for details see the project description here). More particularly, EURDIPLO analyses how the EEAS interacts with the international institution of diplomacy (WP1), the practices of the EEAS in encounters with other EU institutions, member states and third countries, as well as multilateral institutions (WP2) the priorities of the EEAS concerning the nexus between policy paradigms and policies (WP3). It asks new questions about how the EEAS understands its role in contemporary international diplomacy. Using different data sources and methods, EURDIPLO aims to understand the life-world of the EEAS and its diplomats.

The PhD student will mainly conduct research within WP3 and applicants have to provide a short research statement (max. 12,000 characters, space included), which describes the research agenda the candidate proposes to pursue, i.e. the contribution that will help the team achieve the objectives of WP3.
