PhD in reduction of plastic consumption in the hospital sector

Department of Science and Environment, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as PhD in Environmental Risk from 1 August 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position as PhD is limited to a period of 3 years. The Ph.D. project will be a part of the “Plasthåndtering i Region Sjælland” project and the student will be part of the Environmental dynamic research group and also work with the section of Environment, Energy, Transport, Regulation, Innovation, Climate Policy, Department of People and Technology.

Department of Science and Environment is one of four departments at Roskilde University. The Department conducts basic and applied research within medical biology, molecular biology, environmental sciences, chemistry, physics and mathematics. Bachelor and Masters’ programs are offered within these areas.

The research and teaching of the Environmental dynamics group deals with changes in the environment in time and space, whether these changes occur because of natural factors or because of human activities. Among other things, the group works with: Ecotoxicology, plastic pollution and risk assessment, Marine ecology, including nutrient cycles in coastal areas, Plankton ecology, Plant ecophysiology. A large part of the group’s research is application-oriented, and takes place in close collaboration with external partners in all categories: e.g. public authorities, institutions as well as private companies.

Description of the PhD project
The Ph.D. project aims at developing new strategies for reduction of plastic consumption in the Danish hospital sector, with special focus on Region Zealand.

Plastic consumption is one of the major environmental challenges we have to address in the coming years, since plastic pollution have become a ubiquitous environmental problem. Global plastic production was approximately 348 million tonnes in 2017 and is expected to double within the next two decades. The hospital sector is responsible for a significant amount of plastic consumption in Region Zealand and reduced plastic consumption in this sector is an important goal for the region. The Ph.D. will work with several different projects under the “Plasthåndtering i Region Sjælland” (handling of plastic in Region Zealand). The project is a collaboration between Gate 21, Roskilde University and Region Zealand and the work will include: Mass flow analysis of plastic in the hospital sector, experimental testing of pyrolysis as technological approach to recycle contaminated plastic and drivers for plastic consumption at the hospitals.

You will be enrolled as a Ph.D. student at the Doctoral School of Science and Environment.

Responsibilities and tasks
The PhD position is an educational position and the main tasks are in accordance with chapter 3, Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions (https://ufm.dk/en/legislation/prevailing-laws-and-regulations/education/files/engelsk-ph-d-bekendtgorelse.pdf),

You must hold a master’s degree or equivalent within Environmental Risk, Environmental Planning, Environmental biology or comparable field. Qualifications within the following areas are required

  • Experience with conduction mass flow analysis or similar;
  • Experience with experimental work including data collection, data processing and analysis;
  • Experience with plastic pollution studies.

We also emphasize the following qualifications:

  • Experience with working in a team towards a common goal
  • Openness towards engaging with people from other sectors then academia

You are required to be enterprising and to possess good communication skills and to be a visible, involved participant in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department and with external partners in the project.

In the assessment regarding employment consideration will be given to;

  • Any additional academic requirements stated in the job advertisement.

In the assessment regarding enrollment consideration will also be given to the following criteria:

  • Educational skills and any further professional qualifications
  • Grades at Master’s programme or equivalent
  • Quality and relevance of the project description (no more than 2 pages)
  • Ability to complete the Ph.D. project

Terms of employment
The employment is full-time, 37 hours per week and you will refer to associate professor Kristian Syberg. The salary is determined under the Danish collective agreement and scales with experience, starting at DKK 27,593.77

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

After the deadline for applications the Head of Department will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.

Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.

The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and - later on - their assessment.

Once the recruitment process is completed, all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.
