Postdoc Fellowship in Multi-scale and Multi-physics Battery Modelling

The Section for Atomic Scale Modelling and Materials at DTU Energy, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), is looking for outstanding candidates for a 2-year postdoc position within the field of multi-scale and multi-physics modelling of new battery materials, interfaces and cells. The position is part of the Department’s focus on batteries and the Sections core activities on accelerated discovery of battery materials and interfaces in the context of the large-scale research initiative Batttery2030+ and the Marketable Polymer based Al-S battery (AMAPOLA) project funded by the European Union through the H2020.

Project description
The successful candidate should be able to develop a multi-scale and/or multi-physics models to describe the performance of novel battery technologies, in particular aluminium-sulphur batteries using polymerized ionic liquids as electrolytes. The models will be based on a continuum Newman-type model for simulating the entire battery and should be able to describe the battery at various conditions, e.g., cycling rates and temperatures The model will rely on input parameters derived both from experiments, machine learning and multi-scale/ab initio simulations. The developed multi-scale/multi-physics model will help to design the battery components, including dimensions of electrodes, cathode design, and stack architecture.

Qualifications
The candidates should hold a PhD or equivalent degree in physics, chemistry or materials science. Candidates must have a strong background in computational chemistry/materials science and are expected to have performed original scientific research within multi-scale, mesoscopic and/or cell level simulations of batteries, for example:

  • performing coarse grained MD, phase field modelling, cluster expansion or Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations
  • development or application of hybrid or mesoscale models
  • implementing and using Newman’s-like models (e.g. the single particle model or the pseudo two dimensional model) in Matlab, Python or Comsol

Moreover, the successful candidate:

  • is innovative and able to work both independently and in cross-disciplinary teams
  • has good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
  • is able to work independently and take responsibility for progress and quality of projects.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of appointment is two years, starting September 1st 2020 or shortly thereafter.
