PhD scholarship in Epitaxial Growth and Nanoimaging of III-V Nanostructures for Extreme Dielectric Confinement of Light

The Centre for Nanofabrication and Nanocharacterization and the Department of Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) are seeking an outstanding candidate for a PhD position. The position is within the newly established Centre for Nanophotonics (NanoPhoton). The research vision of NanoPhoton is to explore the hitherto inaccessible regime of extreme dielectric confinement of light in optical cavities and to apply the associated enhanced light-matter interaction to solve fundamental outstanding challenges in chipscale information technology. To this end, we will develop the science and technology for a new class of optical nanostructures by combining fundamental electromagnetic and quantum optical theory with state-of-the-art nanofabrication and advanced experimental characterization techniques.

This PhD project is dedicated to advanced epitaxial growth and nanoimaging of Extreme Dielectric Confinement (EDC) nanostructures. It will involve working in state-of-the-art clean room and electron microscopy laboratories, and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in terms of nanofabrication and nanoscale imaging.

Responsibilities and tasks
As a PhD student you will be working closely with other members of the NanoPhoton team and will be responsible for developing a site controlled epitaxial growth technique of III-V on Si. You will fabricate, image and visualize highly confined optical modes in EDC structures using the techniques of electron-energy-loss spectroscopy and cathodeluminescence. This will involve:

  • Developing and applying new epitaxial methods of III-V semiconductors on Si.
  • Acquiring expert skills in transmission and scanning electron microscopy methods.
  • Recording and analyzing multi-dimensional spectroscopic data.
  • Interpretation of the data in terms of theory and correlating it with complementary optical measurements.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. We are looking for a PhD student with a strong background in condensed matter physics, who has excelled in their studies and is now interested in working at the forefront of a new research field. Experience in nanofabrication and spectroscopy would be beneficial. Excellent written and spoken English skills are mandatory.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
