PhD scholarship in New Antioxidants for Protection of Food Emulsions

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Frist 19. juni 2020

The National Food Institute (DTU Food, Denmark) invites applications for a PhD position, which will involve a close collaboration with other research groups at DTU as well as with the US based company Kalsec®. The starting date will be August 1st 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The PhD student will be involved in multidisciplinary research encompassing food science, bioinformatics and analytical chemistry.

Responsibilities and tasks
The overall aim of this PhD project is to identify new plant based antioxidants, which efficiently prevents oxidation in selected food emulsions. The project includes development of new chromatography and/or mass spectrometry methods to determine and identify compounds related to antioxidant activity, the use of bioinformatics to predict antioxidant efficacy as well as storage experiments to determine oxidative stability of food emulsions.

Within the PhD project you will:

  • Be responsible for your own research, supervised by experienced and engaged supervisors in a collaborative environment
  • Perform interdisciplinary research within the fields of lipid oxidation, bioinformatics and analytical chemistry
  • Engage in collaboration with the industrial partner Kalsec. This will involve study trips to Kalsec, which is located in Michigan, US and also to their European site in Mildenhall, UK. It is a prerequisite that the PhD student is able to travel to UK and USA (with appropriate visas if required)
  • Contribute with new knowledge in the field of lipid oxidation and antioxidants for the benefit of both the industry and academia

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) in the field of Food Technology/Science, Chemistry, Chemical engineering or related areas, or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Furthermore, the ideal candidate has:

  • Knowledge on lipid oxidation and antioxidants
  • Experience with chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods
  • Good analytical chemistry and laboratory skills
  • Basic understanding of bioinformatic prediction tools
  • Good collaboration and communication skills (written and oral English)
  • Structured and analytical working approach
  • Skills within scientific paper writing and statistical analyses of data

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
