PhD scholarship in Implementation of Digital Twins for Heat Pump Systems for District Heating

DTU Mechanical Engineering, Section of Thermal Energy, conducts research in the field of sustainable thermal energy technologies for the future energy system. An important part of our research relates to heat pumps and refrigeration technology for providing heating and cooling based on renewable sources for the industrial and commercial consumers as well as household for example by district heating. In collaboration with commercial and academic partners in Denmark and Germany, we have recently initiated a novel initiative in the field of digital twins for optimal operation of heat pumps in smart energy system solutions (See http://digitaltwins4hprs.dk).

We are looking for a new PhD student to take part in research in this project in collaboration with a team of researchers with focus on optimization and numerical modelling of large-scale heat pump systems. You will work in the field of numerical modelling of heat pumps with focus on the development of dynamic models and use of these for performance and control optimization of large-scale heat pumps in operation in district heating systems. The research will also aim at applying the models as digital twins to conduct experiments in the plant operation numerically.

Responsibilities and tasks
The PhD student will do research related to development of numerically effective models which in combination with stochastical data processing methods and decision algorithms will lead to a virtual representation of physical heat pump plants. Direct interaction between the real plant and the virtual representation (Digital Twin) will enable monitoring, diagnosis and optimization of the real plant. This will lead to considerable improvements of the system, in terms of energy efficiency and economic performance. Further, the development of digital twins provides the necessary framework for digitalization of heat pump plants and thereby improving the accessibility of these units for alternative services for the energy system.

Your main research responsibilities are related to:

  • Development of numerically effective models that can be used in system monitoring, fault detection and system optimization methods. The plants will be modelled using the object-oriented modelling language Modelica.
  • Development of numerical methods for adapting numerical models to the state of the physical system
  • Identification of suitable services supplied by digital twins and development of model structures that allow for the delivery of these services
  • Validating models by using datasets from case study plants
  • Disseminating research results to national and international stakeholders in both scientific journals and conferences and in technical meetings
  • Collaborating with project partners on model frameworks and development and experimental campaigns

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

The candidate is expected to have a background in thermal engineering disciplines and numerical modelling of systems as refrigeration and heat pump cycles or in control engineering for these applications.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

DTU Mechanical Engineering covers the fundamental engineering disciplines within Solid mechanics, Fluid mechanics, Coastal and Maritime Engineering, Energy systems and energy conversion, Materials and Surface Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering design and Product development. The department has a scientific staff of about 135 persons, 100 PhD students and a technical/administrative support staff of about 80 persons.
