Postdoc in medical physics

Aarhus Universitet (AU)

The Department of Clinical Medicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Postdoc in the field of medical physics as per 1 August 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a three year full-time position in the project “QA manager for the international PROTECT trial”.

Department of Clinical Medicine
As a postdoc at the Department of Clinical Medicine, you will be part of what is probably the largest health science research department in Denmark. Our clinical research covers all the medical specialities and takes place in close collaboration with the university hospital and the regional hospitals in the Central Denmark Region. We have approx. 30,000 square metres of modern research facilities for experimental surgery and medicine, animal facilities and also advanced scanners at our disposal. The department has overall responsibility for the Master's degree programs in medicine and in molecular medicine. At the department we are approx. 425 academic employees and the same number of PhD students cooperating across disciplines. As a postdoc, you will be working on Aarhus University Hospital or another hospital in the Central Denmark Region. You can read more about the department here and about the faculty here.

About the research project
Proton therapy is an emerging technique for treatment of cancer patients. A European consortium has initiated the international phase III trial (PROTECT) randomizing oesophageal cancer patients between standard photon radiotherapy and proton therapy treatment. The trial will recruit approximately 500 patients in a time frame of five years. We aim for a very high level of quality assurance (QA) in both randomization arms and will collect all scans, treatment plans, and delineations in the Danish national database dcmcollab. During the full treatment course of five weeks, patients may be subject to anatomical changes, potentially ruining target coverage or leading to over dosage of organs at risk. Therefore, weekly CT scans will be acquired and in the event of significant dosimtric changes, new treatment plans will be prepared for the rest of the treatment course. These plans will also be collected in the data base and available for analysis. Some centres will implant fiducial markers, which can be used to evaluate the effect of respiratory and cardiac motion during each treatment fraction.

The trial and database is based at AUH and DCPT and managed by a group of oncologists and medical physicists. The QA work is supervised by medical physicists Ditte Sloth Møller and Lone Hoffmann holding the chair of the QA committee and will be performed in collaboration with the protocol QA committee consisting of medical physicist and physicians from 3-4 European centres. This committee is responsible for maintaining the requested high quality of treatments throughout the treatment period, for instance by site visits and yearly workshops.

Your job responsibilities
As Postdoc in medical physics your position is primarily research-based but may also involve teaching assignments. You will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with colleagues on your project, where you will receive supervision and guidance.

As the QA manager you will be responsible for:

  • Independent research of high international quality, including publication.
  • Setup software for analysis of a huge amount of data
  • Collection and analysis of incoming treatment plans and all QA data
  • Give feedback to the centres in case deviations from protocol requirements are seen
  • Arrangement of yearly workshops for discussion of treatment plans, delineations, treatment strategies etc.
  • On site visits to new centres in collaboration with the QA committee
  • Publication of analysis of the QA-results

You will report to the Head of Department, Jørgen Frøkiær.

Your competences
You have academic qualifications at PhD level in medical physics. You have excellent programming skills with Matlab or Python, and preferably C#. You have analytical skills and the ability to work independently. You are willing to give feedback to the European centres on errors and mistakes and persistently requiring correction of errors. You have prior experience in radiation oncology, preferable from employment in a clinical position. Please note there will be some travel activity in Europe with this position.

As a person, you are ambitious, take ownership and possess good communication and interpersonal skills. We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English.

In order to be assessed as qualified for a Postdoc position, you must meet these academic criteria.
