Are you one of 15 PhD students who will create reliable AI for underwater robots in exciting European network?

IT-Universitetet (ITU)

The European Training Network REMARO on Reliable AI for Marine Robotics is searching candidates for

15 PhD positions
. We seek candidates with interests in artificial intelligence, robotics, and software safety and reliability (software engineering and formal methods). There are 15 different research projects available with different prerequisites and focus, located in Copenhagen, Oslo, Porto, Bremen, Aachen, and Delft.

REMARO
is a team of experienced researchers in marine robotics, AI, software testing and verification opening a PhD program with research topics on reliable autonomy for underwater applications. Nine academic research labs and five companies from five countries operate the network supported by a prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant from the European Commission.

Autonomous robotics underwater is still a dream. Most robots are remotely controlled and need complex infrastructure. The objective of

REMARO
is to make underwater robots more autonomous. We want robots to be able to perform complex underwater missions independently, without causing harm to themselves or to the environment.

If you are interested in Robotics AI, the following research areas are for you:

  • Cognitive mission planning (Positions #6, #8)
  • Knowledge service (digital twin) for submarine inspection (Positions #10, #11)
  • Vision-based and sonar-based localization and navigation (Positions #2, #3, #6)
  • Machine learning for perception and vision (Positions #1, #2, #3)

If you are interested in Software Engineering, Formal Methods, Testing or Verification consider the following research areas:

  • Probabilistic model-checking, and verification for planning (Positions #9, #13, #14)
  • Continuous Quality Assurance (devops) for controllers with dynamic knowledge (Positions #8, #15)
  • Probabilistic testing, model-based testing, and property-based testing for AI controlled systems (Positions #4, #7, #12)
  • System-level safety analysis for robotics and AI (Position #5, #8, #9)

The recruitment for 15 PhD positions on topics from these areas is joint. To increase your chances to get a position in an area of your interest, please choose and prioritize three topics from the detailed list at https://remaro.eu/index.php/positions/. You are encouraged to contact supervisors of the individual projects with technical questions about the planned research and practical questions about the hosting university and the local working environment.

What are the benefits of being a PhD student in our research network?
You will benefit from the collaboration with multiple universities, internships with high-tech companies, and training in scientific and general skills including a PhD school every semester. All these activities will prepare you for a successful career both in academia and in private sector. All 15 students will form a distributed team, that can collaborate and offer mutual support. All will work with experts in diverse fields of

REMARO
. The research projects come with budget to access equipment, labs (including underwater robotics labs), training sites, and research dissemination events (conferences). Do you want to join this effective and visionary team?

Candidate Profile

  • You have a genuine interest in the topics described above and a desire to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • You are enthusiastic about traveling for research conferences, PhD schools, and for internships with partners in different countries.
  • You have obtained a master’s degree (or equivalent) with good results in relevant subjects. Candidates in the final phase of a Master program are also welcome to apply and should mention their expected graduation date.
  • You have a critical, analytical, and creative mind, and enjoy problem solving.
  • You can take responsibility and meet deadlines prioritizing where necessary.
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Formal Requirements

  • Degree:
Master’s degree or equivalent providing access to PhD programs. Degrees in computer science, informatics, mechanical/electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, or in a closely related area will be considered. Applicants must not hold a doctoral degree.
  • Early Career Stage
: Candidates should be within the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research career, at the time of start of the contract. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which formally entitles them to embark on a doctorate, irrespective of whether a doctorate was envisaged.
  • Mobility
: At the date of recruitment, the researcher must not have resided, or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the hiring institution for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. This limits for which of the 15 projects you can apply (carefully consider the geographical location of the hosting institution for each project on the website).
  • Application
: Complete and timely submission exclusively via the on-line application system linked below. Documents submitted must be in English. If supporting documents (e.g., letters of academic references and scan of degree qualification) are not in English, they must be submitted together with a translation to English.

Key Information about the Employment

Duration
The expected start date for the positions is May-Sep 2021. The date is negotiated with each candidate separately. The terms and conditions of the contract will be established according to the specific legislation on the country of employment.

Benefits and salary:

  • Gross salary according to the program regulations depending on the country of employment, subject to taxation in compliance with each National Law. The net salary results from deducting all compulsory (employer and employee) social security contributions as well as direct taxes (e.g. income tax) and insurance from these gross amounts.
  • Additional family allowance (if married or having dependent children).
  • Budget for work-related travel, books, and tuition.
  • Connections to potential employers in Europe.
  • A rich and versatile PhD program with diverse educational modules, including mentorship, summer and winter schools, workshops, hackathons, and internships... lots of fun!
