Ocean and Sea ice remote sensing scientist
The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) opens a 2-year full time position for a research scientist to work with remote sensing activities and the collection of reference measurements.

DMI is a leading European developer and producer of remote sensing products, including Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and Ice Surface Temperature (IST) products for the Arctic Ocean and the North Sea/Baltic Sea region. In addition, we are conducting field work to collect reference measurements for the validation of the satellite observations. Further, the Remote Sensing group participates in the development of new satellite missions in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). The satellite derived products are critical for understanding the effects of climate change and are important inputs to weather and ocean models as well as DMIs ice service. Most of the work is carried out in projects financed through ESA, EUMETSAT, the EU’s Copernicus program and the Danish National Center for Climate Research.

You will be part of the remote sensing group, where you will be responsible for the shipborne SST radiometer campaigns and the validation of new satellite products, as well as participating in the Copernicus and the National Climate Research Centre activities. Finally, you will assist in the UV and Ozone monitoring activities that DMI is conducting.

Main working tasks:

  • Take lead in the collecting of Fiducial Reference Measurements (FRMs) of Sea Surface Temperature in the high latitudes
  • Work on the validation and development of satellite products in the high latitudes
  • Participate in the activities within the National Climate Research Centre (NCKF)
  • Present results at scientific conferences and publish the results in peer-reviewed journals
  • Participate in the Copernicus CMEMS SST and Sea Ice projects.
  • Assist in the collection of the UV and Ozone observations

Qualifications/Experience

  • Msc. or PhD degree in geophysics, engineering or similar within the field of remote sensing
  • Experience with remote sensing of the ocean and ice
  • Experience with the collection of in situ reference measurements
  • Advanced programming skills in e.g. Fortran, Python or Matlab.
  • Experience with Linux and operational applications
  • Good skills in oral and written English.
  • Can work well in a team in close collaboration with your colleagues.

The Research Department at the DMI employs a staff of approx. 70 scientists, of which 14 are located in the remote sensing group. We have a strong international profile, which is also reflected in the many nationalities here and in an English "working language".

Employment and salary
Employment and salary will be according to the Danish Law and Agreements. It will be possible to apply for an addition to the basic salary.

DMI offers a flexible working week of 37 hours including a paid lunch break, and six weeks of paid vacation annually.
