I-HANK: The International Heterogeneous-Agent New Keynesian Model
UCPH invites applications for two PhD scholarships. Employment is expected to begin September 1st, 2021.

Applications are invited for two PhD scholarships at the Department of Economics, UCPH, in connection with the project “I-HANK: The International Heterogeneous-Agent New Keynesian Model”. The overarching aim of the project is to provide the theoretical and empirical foundations of an International Heterogeneous-Agent New Keynesian macroeconomic model (I-HANK), and to assess the model’s implications for the degree of business-cycle comovement across countries. The project has two main components; a theoretical and an empirical part. One PhD student will focus on the empirical part and the other on the theoretical part of the project. The empirical component seeks to extend the current knowledge of the international co-movement of business cycles by collecting and analyzing new data on how disaggregated and distributional business-cycle statistics are connected across countries. The theoretical component focuses directly on the development of the new I-HANK model. The two PhD projects are part of a larger project financed by a Young Researcher grant from the Carlsberg Foundation, and the PhD students will be part of a team of three researchers at the UCPH and additional international collaborators. The PhD students are expected to contribute to joint projects with other team members, but will also have ample space for independent work. Further information about the research project can be found here:

Deadline for applications: 15th of March, 2021
Job description
The positions are available for a 3-year period (for applicants holding a master degree in Economics) or a
4-year period (under the so-called 4+4 model for applicants holding a BSc degree, and who have also completed one year of master level studies at the time of employment).

The tasks of a PhD student are to

  • Participate in our research team
  • Write scientific articles that are included in the PhD theses of the applicants
  • Attend PhD courses
  • Participate in conferences/workshops/seminars
  • Teach and disseminate your research
  • Visit another international research institution for at least a few months

We seek candidates with a strong academic background in Economics, qualifying for enrolment in the 5+3 programme (3 year PhD programme); or 4+4 programme (4 year PhD programme) in Economics. In the assessment of the candidate’s qualifications, emphasis will be on grade performance in core economics courses, the project proposal and potential relevant professional experience or publications. Good English language skills are also important. Strong computational skills and/or previous experience with large datasets would be an advantage.

In order to be eligible for a scholarship in the 5+3 PhD study programme, the applicant must have completed a two-year MSc degree programme in Economics, or have earned 120 ECTS credits at an equivalent academic level before starting his or her employment. Applicants should check the study programmes for more detailed descriptions of the entry requirements. PhD students are paid a salary in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The monthly salary begins at 27,520 DKK / approx. 3,700 EUR (February 2021-level) plus pension. The PhD student has a work obligation of up to 840 hours over the 3 year period of time without additional pay. The work obligation can, for instance, include teaching.

Students who have completed a BSc plus 60 ECTS of an MSc degree programme in Economics would enrol as PhD students simultaneously with their enrolment in the MSc degree programme (the 4+4 programme). Applicants should check the study programmes for more detailed descriptions of the entry requirements. Until an MSc degree is obtained, the grant is paid partly in the form of up to 48 state education grant portions (in Danish: SU-klip). More specifically the PhD student will be paid two grant portions per month plus salary for work (teaching, presentations etc.) which totals a workload of at least 300 hours. Payment and conditions of employment are carried out in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). Upon completion of the MSc degree the student is transferred to the salary-earning part of the PhD studies.

Applications must be submitted electronically no later than 15th of March, 2021 through the electronic application system, which you access through the link below.
Applications should include the following enclosures:

  • CV
  • Degree certificates and transcripts of all relevant course work
  • A short project proposal (max. 2 pages) outlining a research idea within the field of the project (this is only used to evaluate the research maturity of applicants, and is not binding in any way afterwards). The proposal should outline how the candidate would approach one of the two main components of the research project (the empirical or the theoretical part). Applicants should formulate an idea pertaining to the component of the project they would prefer to work on.
  • List of publications (if any)

The University of Copenhagen wishes to reflect the surrounding society, and invites all qualified applicants, regardless of personal background, to apply for the positions. In order to be awarded a PhD scholarship the applicant has to enrol as a PhD student at the Faculty of Social Sciences, cf. the rules of the Danish Ministerial order No 1039 of 27 August 2013.
