PhD position on Green Accounting Standards

Copenhagen Business School - CBS

CBS invites applicants for

a PhD position on Green Accounting Standards
to investigate what agents and technologies are required for new green accounting standards to develop in a way that encourages firms and governments to combat climate breakdown. We invite PhD proposals that focus on the expert networks, standards, and tools needed to bring green accounting in international standards and government and corporate policy.

This post is funded by the ‘TIME MIRROR: Accounting for the Green Transition’ project, a collaboration between the Department of Accounting and the Department of Organization at CBS. The position is across these two departments and physically located in the Department of Accounting. The project is funded by the Danish Research Council’s Thematic Research on People and Society program. This project is led by Professor Thomas Riise Johansen in the Department of Accounting. The key collaborator in the Department of Organization is Professor Leonard Seabrooke, who is responsible for research on expert networks. The project is concerned with the production of tools and standards necessary for firms to embrace being net-zero carbon compliant and assist the green transition. This includes the development of new accounting standards that produce incentives to consider future environmental damage as well as locating the expert networks and pathways for professionals to carry these ideas.

Interested candidates are invited to submit a brief PhD proposal with their application package (max. 5 pages).

Given this is an

interdisciplinary project that cuts across accounting studies and international political economy

we are
particularly interested in applicants who have familiarity with scholarship on governance standards, professions and expert networks, and the role of accounting in society. The project proposal should be theoretically grounded in a way that leverages applicants’ expertise and contributes to our understanding of cross-sectoral collaboration in the context of humanitarian emergencies. The proposal should also include a well-considered indication of the intended research design, such as a description of the research context and potential cases to be selected.

The PhD will work in close collaboration with the rest of the project team and will be eligible for considerable financial support for field work and data collection. It is expected that the student will be supervised by Professor Thomas Riise Johansen in the Department of Accounting and also by Professor Leonard Seabrooke in the Department of Organization.

Applicants need to have obtained a B for their master thesis on the EU ECTS grading scale (a 10 on the 7-point Danish scale). For comparison, please see the following EU grade conversion table: https://www.studyineurope.eu/grades.

The three-year PhD programme at CBS allows you to conduct research under the supervision of CBS professors, supported by research training courses. The programme is highly international, and you are expected to participate in international research conferences and to spend time abroad as a visiting PhD student. See the CBS homepage for more information about the PhD programme, http://uk.cbs.dk/phd.

CBS PhD graduates are held in high esteem not only in academia and research institutions but also in government and business where their research qualifications are increasingly demanded. One third of CBS PhD graduates go on to employment outside universities and public research institutions.

Copenhagen Business School has a broad commitment to the excellence, distinctiveness and relevance of its teaching and research programmes.
