Background
The existing Storstrøm Bridge (Storstrømsbroen) will be demolished by the end of 2023. The project, which has a total value of 330 million DKK is the largest demolition project of any bridge structure in Denmark to date. The bridge owner Danish Road Directorate have desired a strong focus on the environment, and material recycling in this exciting project. Rambøll has been chosen as the main consultant on the project and will be responsible for planning, tendering and completion of the project. The project is solved in collaboration with the Danish Technological Institute, which will focus on concrete and its recycling potential. With more bridge structures approaching their lifetime expectancies we predict an increased need of environmentally friendly demolitions in the future.
One of the main objectives is to clarify the environmental aspects, so that the demolition of the structure will have as small an impact as possible on the surrounding environment. This also including the maritime environment in The Great Stream (Storstrømmen). Moreover, sustainability and recycling possibilities of the existing materials are also of high priority.
