Americas Division Intern - Multiple Locations Considered

Human Rights Watch

Americas Division Intern
Application Deadline: March 4, 2021
The Americas Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a graduate student intern for the summer of 2021 in the New York or Washington, D.C. office (other locations near a HRW office may also be considered). Ideally, the intern will be available beginning in May or June 2021 for 35 hours per week (dates and times are flexible).

Due to COVID-19, many of our offices remain closed or are open at a limited capacity. HRW prioritizes the safety of our interns. In locations that have eased office restrictions and are open at a limited capacity, interns are not expected to report to the office and remote arrangements will remain an option for the foreseeable future. However, interns may have the option of reporting to an office on a voluntary basis in accordance with HRW’s COVID-19 policies.

Intern will learn and build skills in:

  • Conducting desk research;
  • Monitoring current events in Latin America;
  • Identifying and understanding key issues in the Latin American region; and
  • Drafting documents.

Students will also have opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, professional development workshops, special events relating to human rights, as well as network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees. As an HRW intern, students will take skills acquired in school and apply them in a professional setting.

Additional opportunities:

  • Direct exposure to the workings of a large, international human rights organization;
  • Close supervision by HRW staff to provide feedback and support;
  • Interaction with other U.S. and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials;
  • Access to HRW materials and publications;
  • Attending select in-house events such as a speaker series events, and other events organized within the organization, particularly for interns;
  • Opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights; and
  • Academic credit (students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements).

Requirements:

  • Enrollment in an accredited graduate program for the duration of the internship term. Students in law school or other highly relevant graduate programs, preferably from professional schools, and individuals with journalism experience in Latin America are strongly encouraged to apply;
  • Well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable;
  • Commitment to public service, and a strong interest in international human rights and current affairs in Latin America are highly preferred;
  • Fluency or high level of proficiency in either Spanish or Portuguese is essential;
  • Familiarity with the region and relevant coursework are highly desirable; and
  • Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are essential.

Salary: Interns will be paid an hourly wage of USD 15.00 per hour. Human Rights Watch offers twenty (20) days of vacation prorated per year pursuant to the work schedule. Students may be able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by HRW staff, and interaction with other US and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
