Postdoc in Reduction of Ash Deposition and Corrosion in WtE Plants by Sulfur Recirculation

A two-year postdoc position on reduction of ash deposition and corrosion in WtE (waste-to-energy) plants by sulfur recirculation is available at the CHEC Research Centre, DTU Chemical Engineering. The position is part of the EUDP project “Sulfur Recirculation for higher green power production and lower dioxin formation” in collaboration with Babcock & Wilcox Vølund A/S, Babcock & Wilcox Vølund AB, and Måbjerg Energy Center.

Waste-to-Energy (WtE) technology is currently the most competitive and mature technology for producing heat and electricity from municipal solid waste. The electrical efficiency in WtE plants is limited by the maximum achievable temperature in superheaters, which is constrained by the corrosion caused by superheater deposits. Sulfur Recirculation is a technology developed to reduce the corrosion rate of the superheaters in WtE plants, by recirculating sulfur from the wet flue gas cleaning back to the boiler in a form of sulfuric acid, and thereby producing a less corrosive environment for the superheaters by decreasing the Cl/S ratio in the deposits.

To support the further development of the Sulfur Recirculation technology, this project aims to provide a thorough evaluation of the effect of sulfur addition on ash deposition and corrosion under WtE boiler conditions.

Responsibilities and qualifications

The main responsibilities and tasks of the candidate include:

  • Performing full-scale ash deposition probe measurements in a WtE plant operating with Sulfur Recirculation technology
  • Conducting experiments in an entrained flow reactor to evaluate sulfur addition on ash chemistry and deposition under conditions relevant to WtE plants
  • Evaluating full-scale and laboratory experimental results using theoretical tools such as chemical kinetic modelling and thermodynamic equilibrium calculations
  • Writing technical reports and scientific articles

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree

in chemical engineering or equivalent, with a strong


background on combustion, preferably with research experience in ash chemistry, deposition and corrosion.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of the employment is 2 years beginning 1st April 2021 or by appointment.
