The National Food Institute (DTU Food) at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as

Ph.D. student in the Research Group for Food Production Engineering. In our research, we

use food processing in creating a sustainable and effective food production, optimizing resource consumption, utilizing side streams and developing technologies and food products for specific requirements. The research group has a dynamic staff with high international visibility, many research collaborations with leading international universities and organisations and a successful track record of national and international research projects.

The PhD position is aiming to develop technologies to encapsulate sensitive compounds that can be utilized in health-promoting foods. The project involves a close collaboration with BASF A/S.

You are expected to start May 1st, 2020, or soon hereafter.

Responsibilities and qualifications
We wants to expand our research in sustainably extraction, functionalization and valorisation of interested molecules for food and pharmaceutical applications.

You will contribute to the research by establishing electrohydrodynamic processing methods to encapsulate sensitive health-promoting compounds to enhance their health effects and protect against degradation.

The project will cover the following tasks:

  • Develop electrohydrodynamic encapsulation processing technologies to protect sensitive compounds
  • Characterisation of the morphology, stability, and functionality of the encapsulated compounds

Further, you will have tasks including:

  • Preparation of project meetings
  • Disseminate results at conferences and through scientific articles
  • Supervision duties of bachelor or master students
  • A mandatory external research stay
  • Attend PhD courses (30 ECTS)

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. Candidates with master degree in food technology and related areas are preferred.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU Food. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.


The preferred candidate is ambitious, has a high motivation for research excellence and good command of written and spoken English.

Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge in:

  • Experience in electrohydrodynamic processing methods
  • Experience with biopolymers
  • Experience with encapsulation using nano-microstructures
  • Experience with microscopy, physicochemical and analytical characterization techniques
  • Previous experience in Innovation R&D projects

An internal panel will assess all applicants with appropriate qualifications.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
