The Department of Electrical Engineering and Department of Photonics are cooperating within the Center for Nanophotonics (NanoPhoton) for research on light at the nanoscale; in particular, the extreme confinement of light in dielectric structures. From DTU Elektro participates the Electromagnetic Systems group with expertise in electromagnetic field theory, computational techniques, and microwave antenna and components technology; and from DTU Fotonik participates the Quantum and Laser Photonics group with expertise in light physics, nanophotonics, and solid-state laser technology.

We seek a highly qualified and strongly motivated PhD student for research on electromagnetic field theory analysis for extreme dielectric confinement of light. This PhD project aims at a rigorous understanding of light confinement on basis of the electromagnetic field theory; in addition, it will pursue microwave experiments exhibiting phenomena that also exist, but are more difficult to observe, in optics. It will include the study of canonical solutions and wave phenomena with strong light confinement, the analysis of fundamental radiation and scattering problems exhibiting extreme dielectric confinement, the study of proper measures for quantifying field/light confinement, and the design, implementation and execution of experiments in the microwave frequency range. The PhD student will be assigned a main supervisor from the Electromagnetic Systems group and a co-supervisor from the Quantum and Laser Photonics group.

Responsibilities and tasks

The PhD student must undertake the research project under supervision and fulfil the education, dissemination, and teaching requirements for PhD projects at DTU. The PhD student will work closely with other researchers and coordinate her/his work according to the mission of NanoPhoton. The research will include theoretical, computational as well as experimental works, and the PhD student must exercise high scientific standards in each type of work. The two main objectives are

  • A rigorous field theoretical understanding of extreme light confinement
  • Experimental demonstration of extreme microwave field confinement

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. The degree must be in a field relevant for the PhD project and the candidate must possess strong skills in the mathematics of electromagnetic field theory, good skills in programming, and good skills in experimental work. Excellent English writing and speaking skills are mandatory.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

The research vision of NanoPhoton - Center for Nanophotonics – is to explore the hitherto inaccessible regime of extreme dielectric confinement of light in optical cavities and to apply the associated enhanced light-matter interaction to solve fundamental outstanding challenges in chipscale information technology. To this end, we will develop the science and technology for a new class of optical nanostructures by combining fundamental electromagnetic and quantum optical theory with state-of-the-art nanofabrication and advanced experimental characterization techniques.
