PhD fellowship on 20th century British literature, gender and work

Syddansk Universitet (SDU)

The Department for the Study of Culture, University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a PhD fellowship on 20th century British literature, gender and work.

The focus of the PhD project will be 20th century British literature and 20th century socio-political discourses on gender and work, such as those related to feminist politics and the Women’s Liberation Movement. Within this area, applicants should outline an individual research project that explores potential connections between 20th century literary texts and contemporaneous debates on gender and work in the UK, studies the connections between particular literary modes or strategies and the gendering of work, and considers how new ideas about the gendered division of labour in the 20th century were explored in literary texts.

The PhD project will be part of the research group Feminized: A New Literary History of Women’s Work, funded by the Carlsberg Foundation https://www.carlsbergfondet.dk/en/Forskningsaktiviteter/Bevillingsstatistik/Bevillingsoversigt/CF20_0554_Emily-J-Hogg.The goal of the research project is to explore how aesthetic and thematic engagements with conventional forms of women’s work in twentieth-century anglophone literature contribute to the understanding of a major trend in contemporary global labour markets: the feminization of work. The project aims to develop new approaches to literary history by returning to works from the recent past to show how interpretation of their formal and thematic strategies can be brought into dialogue with the major contemporary issue of feminized labour. Applicants are therefore encouraged to reflect on their literary-historical methodology and explain how their proposed project on 20th century literature can help increase understanding of present challenges related to gender and work.

The working language of the project is English and the PhD thesis should be written in English. The successful candidate will join a dynamic international research group; he/she will be expected to contribute to seminars and workshops organized by the project and demonstrate interest in collaboration and teamwork.

Applicants are encouraged to make early contact with the PI for an informal discussion about their proposed projects.

Applicants should have a master’s degree in English or Comparative Literature or a related discipline.

Please note that not all applicants will receive an assessment due to shortlisting.
