PhD scholarship in EdTech for Inclusive Entrepreneurship Education

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Virksom - a-kasse og faglig organisation for selvstændige

Frist 1. maj 2021

DTU, The Technical University of Denmark, Centre for Technology Entrepreneurship invites applicants for a 3-year PhD position on “EdTech for Inclusive Entrepreneurship Education”, starting ideally on 1 August 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter in 2021. This PhD project will be supervised by Associate Professor Carina Lomberg.

The Centre for Technology Entrepreneurship (DTU Entrepreneurship) puts evidence-based research in focus on a wide range of management, pedagogic, and policy issues related to entrepreneurship and innovation. Our research promotes technology-based entrepreneurship by generating, disseminating, and applying knowledge and competencies to education and business development within and beyond DTU.

We collaborate closely with a range of industry partners, as well as private and public organizations. We strive to develop the entrepreneurial capabilities of students, civil society, executives, researchers, and policymakers to create positive social and economic change. At the Centre, the interplay between research, education and start-ups creates a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The PhD project focuses on developing, testing and implementing technological interventions towards neurodiversity in entrepreneurship education. The overarching aim is to demonstrate how dispositions and behaviours associated with neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g. ADHD, ASD) which often impair students in classrooms, can become as real asset in an entrepreneurial context. It is based on prior research showing that neuro-diverse individuals have greater entrepreneurial intentions, are more likely to engage in entrepreneurial behaviour (Lerner et al., 2018), and can become very successful entrepreneurs (Wiklund et al., 2018). However, neurodevelopmental disorders often go along with social difficulties, and students with neuro-developmental disorders have reported to have difficulties working in groups – particularly under the current circumstances related to COVID-19. Given that entrepreneurship seems to a promising path through which people with neurodevelopmental disorders flourish, this PhD project aims at finding ways to connect the potential advantages of neurodiversity with the particularities of being an entrepreneur (e.g., uncertainty, autonomy, decision-making) – particularly when working in teams.

In this project, you are expected to make use of technology advancements that have the potential to empower every student and reduce inequalities within education. Potential questions to be addressed could centre around (1) how to develop or use educational technology that e.g. improves cognitive focus on work tasks, rehearse appropriate behaviour, reduce anxiety, and support collaboration, to better integrate students with neurodevelopmental disorder into their teams; (2) how to remove stigma related to neurodevelopmental disorders and build on inherent benefits and strengths of neurodiversity for innovation-related team work.

This includes in-depth qualitative measures and insights about current EdTech offers, current difficulties and potentials in learning and social interaction for neuro-diverse students and their team members, current procedures and potential for teaching entrepreneurship. It further includes the development of new (or use of existing) technologies in an entrepreneurship education setting including a rigours analysis of its effectiveness. As such, the project integrates insights from entrepreneurship, EdTech, and pedagogy/psychology. While you do not necessarily need to be an expert in all areas upon starting the PhD, we expect expertise in at least one area and motivation and interest in the others.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your research tasks include theoretical and empirical work on the above-mentioned topics. We expect you to disseminate your results in academically and practically relevant outlets, as well as translating your knowledge into teaching materials and exercises.

The project work requires good understanding of qualitative and experimental methods, good communication skills, an analytically mind-set and good digital skills. Experience in developing or using EdTech would be of great advantage.

We are looking for a candidate with a background in psychology, entrepreneurship or computer science with an understanding and interest in translating your knowledge to entrepreneurship education.

DTU Entrepreneurship is a newly established centre aiming to be a world-renowned centre of excellence for building the entrepreneurial and technology innovation capabilities of students, researchers, and organizations. The centre currently employs approximately 30 people, including eight permanent faculty and eight PhD students. The centre collaborates very closely with colleagues across DTU’s entrepreneurial eco-system. The centre provides a portfolio of courses for all students to become exemplary engineers with deep technical skills and the capability to recognize needs, innovate, productize and commercialize new technology. Research at the centre focus on building an effective feedback loop between entrepreneurship research and practice to ensure research are translated into practice – and that practice provides an empirical foundation for research.

We enable ethically minded entrepreneurs to build solutions that benefit people, society and the world. The Centre experiments with new entrepreneurial methodologies and activities to push boundaries within research and education.

The proposed project is tailored towards DTU’s strategy for the years 2020-2025 which is summarized by the headline “Technology for people” and will help being a leading inclusive university that facilitates an innovative mindset where people work together.
