Student Assistant, Data Analysis and GIS Modelling for COWI in Lyngby, Denmark

COWI A/S

Student Assistant, Data Analysis and GIS Modelling for COWI in Lyngby, Denmark (36008)
Application deadline: 30 April 2021 - Denmark - Location: Lyngby - Bridge

Are you interested joining one of a leading international consulting company that creates value and solutions to some of the most complex issues worldwide? Do you want to be part of this daily puzzle, supporting and developing the methods and tools we use to solve the challenges that arise? Then Join us, as we are now looking for a Student Assistant to our risk analysis section focusing on data analysis and GIS modelling!
JOIN OUR RISK ANALYSIS TEAM IN LYNGBY
The Risk analysis section is an integral part of our infrastructure business and resides in our main office in Kongens Lyngby, Denmark. By investigating the risk aspects of major infrastructure projects, the section assists the design teams and client organisations to ensure suitable, efficient and safe designs. Risk analysis and probabilistic modelling are applied in conjunction with modelling of the system behaviour and physical interrelations to evaluate the risks of specific designs. One of the most significant hazards of concern are ship collisions with bridges and offshore structures. As input to these analyses we typically use large sets of vessel movement data (AIS data), which we analyse using SQL, Python, ArcGIS and Excel/VBA. We are looking for someone to not only support but actually be an extension of the specialist team supporting us within data analysis, GIS analysis and visualisation.

Through our involvement in exciting and challenging projects such as the record-breaking Çanakkale Bridge in Turkey or offshore wind farms across the Danish waters and internationally, we provide innovative state-of-the-art solutions and contribute to constantly pushing the boundaries of engineering design.

A POSITION THAT WILL PUSH YOUR DEVELOPMENT FURTHER
The risk analysis team supports our clients and the entire COWI group with analysis and assessment within a range of project such as bridge, tunnels, railways, energy or offshore sectors. We analyse risks qualitatively and quantitatively to solve client and project needs.

In this position, you will join our global team of experts and work closely with project managers and specialists. Your day to day tasks in our team will be to :

  • Support our specialists and project managers with project work such as data analysis and GIS development.
  • Help, learn and develop our abilities to process and visualise data : AIS data (vessel position data) is key in many of our analysis. Typically, these datasets contain millions of rows.
  • Document the work from the above activities through reports and presentations

On the longer run, you work is likely to be extended further:

  • Set out methodological approaches and develop models to analyse and solve the problems
  • Participate in hazard/risk workshops
  • Engage with project stakeholders to understand the issues and problems in question.

COWI is a leader within our field, because our employees are leaders within theirs. We invite you to learn from the best and expand your potential in an outstanding environment, where we collaborate on shaping tomorrow's societies. Alongside your manager, you outline the path for your development and build your expertise on a day-to-day basis, working on global and local assignments.

YOUR SKILLS. OUR TEAM. TOGETHER, WE DESIGN THE FUTURE
Your skills are the key to our success. Working across borders and disciplines, we share knowledge and build strong relationships with colleagues and customers. You contribute your expertise and get to learn from the best.

To succeed in this position, we believe that you should be a team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and preferably in one Scandinavian language

Furthermore, you should have :

  • Completed or almost completed Bachelor's degree in engineering or science along with curiosity for transportation and energy projects
  • Experience with GIS analysis – experience with ArcGIS is a benefit but not a prerequisite
  • A curious mindset that is eager to learn new and not afraid being giving challenging tasks in a fast-paced consultancy environment
  • Experience with risk analysis, statistics and probabilistic modelling and reliability theory or wish to develop within these technical areas

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?
