Industrial PhD scholarship in Stability Enhancement of Weakly-Connected Offfshore Wind Power Plants by Wind Turbines with Grid-Forming Converter Contr

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Frist 6. maj 2021

Centre for Electric Power and Energy (CEE) at the Department of Electrical Engineering (

DTU Electrical Engineering), DTU and Siemens Gamesa

Renewable

Energy invite applications for a 3-year industrial PhD position in “

Stability enhancement of weakly-connected offshore wind power plants by wind turbines with grid-forming converter control”. The industrial PhD project is funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark and Siemens Gamesa.

CEE offers outstanding career opportunities, has very strong relations to the industry and focuses on transforming the electric power system into an intelligent infrastructure based on renewable energy.

In the coming years the offshore wind market will experience an increased growth in several markets around the world. Consequently, renewable energy sources being able to offer ancillary services such as frequency support and synthetic inertia. An emerging solution to raise the renewable penetration limit and offer ancillary services is by operating converters from wind turbines and other renewable sources with grid-forming control. Due to the expected growth in the offshore market approximately 20-40 GW of the total installed offshore wind power, it is expected to require grid-forming based control by 2030. Therefore, it is critical to develop the technology and knowhow surrounding grid-forming to meet the market demands and requirements.

Responsibilities and tasks

The objective of the project is to investigate, develop and verify grid-forming wind turbine converter control that enhances the stability of weakly-connected offshore wind power plants (WPPs).

You will contribute to the following tasks:

  • investigating promising grid-forming control schemes
  • developing analysis tools that identify stability issues in the design/scoping phase of a grid-forming connected WPP; and
  • increasing knowhow of complex interactions that may exist between wind turbines with grid-forming technology and other WPP components.

Qualifications

You should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) in Electrical Engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

The candidate with the following knowledge will be preferred:

  • Fundamental knowledge about the power system operation, control and analysis;
  • Good knowledge of power system simulation tools, such as PowerFactory, Matlab Simulink, etc.; and
  • Knowledge/experience about
  • wind power modeling and control.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide
