PhD scholarship at the Art as Forum research centre

The Department of Arts and Cultural Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Denmark, invites applications for one 3-year PhD scholarship affiliated with the New Carlsberg Foundation research centre Art as Forum to be filled by September 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The main subjects covered by the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies are cultural production and art, cultural theory, cultural history and cultural dissemination. The Department conducts research and runs higher education programs from BA to PhD level. Further information about the department can be found at www.artsandculturalstudies.ku.dk

Applicant should hold qualifications in arts and cultural studies and have solid theoretical and analytical competences. The proposed PhD-project should address central questions to the conceptualization and understanding of art and communality in a historical, analytical or theoretical light and add to the variety of the affiliated researchers in Art as Forum, preferably with a transdisciplinary approach.

The PhD scholar is expected to conduct an individual research project and will take part in the Art as Forum research group as well as in the organization of research and outreach activities. More information about the centre can be found here: https://artsandculturalstudies.ku.dk/art-as-forum/

Please note that applications which do not adhere to the formal requirements (read more in the two sections ‘Admission requirements ‘and ‘Qualification requirements’ below) will not be taken into consideration for the PhD scholarship.

Admission requirements
Applicants need to hold a two-year Master's degree (120 ECTS) or the equivalent.

Applicants must have submitted their thesis at the time of application, to the extent the thesis forms part of their Master program. In case you have not obtained your diploma by the application deadline, you must include a statement (pre-approval) from your university declaring that you have been awarded the master degree.

Applicants with a non-Danish Master's degree will have their degree assessed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science in order to establish, if the Master's degree is equivalent to a Danish Master's degree. Excellent communication skills in English is considered essential and applicants must speak and write academic English fluently. The PhD Administration may ask applicants to document their proficiency in English at any time during the recruitment process if this is considered necessary.

Qualification requirements
Qualifications are evaluated on the basis of their general educational and academic background, taking into account grade average, thesis grade, language proficiency, publications and other academic activities.

The proposed PhD project and study plan will also be evaluated with regard to originality, choice of theory and method, academic relevance and prospects for completion within the required timeframe of 36 months.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to reflect on how their project relates to current research activities at the department.

Communication skills

Complete CV, including a list of publications, where relevant.

Project description
The application must include a detailed project description containing the overall objectives, reflections on the intended PhD project's method and design as well as a timetable. This description should refer to the project “Art as Forum”.

The description must not exceed six standard pages, corresponding to max. 12,000 characters including spaces (including curriculum, title, punctuation, figures, footnotes and references, but excluding bibliography/bibliography). Applications that do not comply with these guidelines will not be considered.

Diploma and transcript of records
Applicants must upload the following:

  • A copy of their Master’s degree diploma (if this not available before the application deadline, pre-approval must be submitted)
  • A copy of their Master’s degree transcript (including an official description of the grading scale)
  • A copy of their Bachelor’s degree diploma
  • A copy of their Bachelor’s degree transcript (including an official description of the grading scale).

If the Master’s diploma and/or transcripts are in a language other than English, German, French, Spanish, Danish, Norwegian or Swedish, the application must also include a translation into one of these languages.

The diplomas/certificates and transcripts must be translated by, or the translation of them approved by, the Danish embassy or consulate in the country where the original document was issued.

The administration encourages applicants from within the EU to enclose a Diploma Supplement. Statements of consent can be submitted with the application. For example, agreement of access to special archives, agreement of exchange at an international university etc.

Do NOT upload or submit recommendations, publications or your Master thesis.
The recruitment process
After the deadline for applications, applicants are selected for assessment on the advice of the Appointment Committee. All applicants will be notified whether they are shortlisted for assessment or not. Hereafter, the Dean appoints an Assessment Committee and the selected applicants are notified of the composition of this committee. Each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment which relates to their own application.
Afterwards selected qualified candidates will be invited for an interview. Please be advised that a positive assessment does not necessarily mean that you will be invited for an interview.

Enrolment as a PhD student at the Faculty of Humanities' PhD School is a precondition for employment as a PhD scholar.

As a PhD scholar at The Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen, you will be supervised for approximately 180 hours distributed over 6 semesters. In addition to this, you must complete courses totalling approximately 30 ECTS. On completion of the PhD programme you must submit a PhD thesis.

Terms of employment
PhD scholars at the Faculty of Humanities are appointed under the terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. According to the agreement, PhD scholars are obliged – without any additional remuneration – to perform tasks assigned to them corresponding to 840 working hours over the three years. These tasks will primarily be in the form of teaching, dissemination, research or other related academic areas.

Please note that it is normally a precondition for employment that the applicant in question does not already have a PhD degree. Applicants who have already obtained a PhD degree will, as a main rule, be dismissed.
